Helmut Marko Speaks Out on Mercedes’ Front Wing Saga: Denies Red Bull’s FIA Inspection Request Amid Rising Tensions
"Helmut Marko expresses lack of shock – Delivers his thoughts on Mercedes' innovative front wing
Helmut Marko inquires whether Red Bull prompted the FIA to scrutinize Mercedes' latest front wing design more thoroughly."
Helmut Marko has refuted claims that Red Bull sought the FIA's scrutiny over Mercedes' latest front wing configuration.
Mercedes has seen an improvement in their performance following the introduction of a new front wing at the Monaco Grand Prix, culminating in their most impressive performance of the season during the recent Canadian Grand Prix.
George Russell secured Mercedes' initial pole position and their first podium finish of the season by coming in third, just one spot ahead of his teammate Lewis Hamilton, who achieved his highest finish of 2024 in fourth place.
The publication Auto Motor und Sport from Germany has reported that Red Bull is becoming increasingly wary of their competitors' front wings, amidst discussions of a potential new controversy over flexible wings unfolding in Formula 1.
In response to inquiries about the veracity of rumors indicating Red Bull had requested the FIA to examine Mercedes' latest design, Marko stated to Austrian outlet OE24, "That's not accurate."
"The team has introduced an updated front wing, and the broadcast footage from Montreal distinctly shows that the front wings on Russell and Hamilton's cars are visibly flexing."
"Nonetheless, the wings possessed the required durability at the time of their approval. This doesn't astonish me."
"We frequently had to inspect our wings, adhering to a strict protocol that specifies the weight limit beyond which a wing should not flex."
"The game is well-liked for its strategy of maximizing every aspect to ensure it meets the technical standards. Once the race begins, the wing is adjusted to a lower position to improve aerodynamic efficiency."
Marko disclosed that ahead of the next Spanish and Austrian Grands Prix, F1 teams will undergo new inspections by the FIA.
"The 81-year-old from Austria mentioned that the issue has repeatedly arisen, especially when the distortion was evident in the TV footage."
"Everything proceeded smoothly in Montreal. A fresh evaluation is on the cards for Barcelona and Spielberg among others, and it must pass muster once more. Naturally, our rivals are scrutinizing this closely, not just our team."
