Hamilton’s Struggles and Speculation of a ‘Divorce’ from Mercedes: Naomi Schiff Weighs In on F1 Drama
"Is Lewis Hamilton Moving On?" – Explanation for Mercedes Split Suggested
The end of Lewis Hamilton's stint with Mercedes is being compared to a "breakup".
Ex-W Series competitor Naomi Schiff has compared Lewis Hamilton's exit from Mercedes to a "breakup," given his challenging beginning to the season.
Hamilton has faced challenges in reaching his peak performance in the 2024 F1 season when compared to his Mercedes teammate, George Russell.
Russell dominates the qualifying head-to-head with an 8-1 lead following the Montreal race and currently holds a higher position in the drivers' championship standings.
Hamilton's lackluster performance, especially during Saturdays, has led to several enigmatic comments from the seven-time world champion.
After the race in Monaco, the 39-year-old implied that he might not surpass Russell in qualifying for the remainder of the season.
In Canada, Hamilton appeared to hold himself more accountable for his poor performance in qualifying.
During the recent episode of the Sky Sports F1 podcast, Schiff shared her insights on Hamilton's performance.
"She believes that when the chance arises, it activates something within you, making you more vigilant,” she explained. “Reflecting on the events in Abu Dhabi in 2021, returning in 2022 with a vehicle that couldn't seek retribution must have been incredibly aggravating for Lewis.
From a psychological standpoint, it's understandable that this situation might have weighed on him somewhat. Overcoming such a challenge and not being able to express himself right away likely posed a significant difficulty. Observing him in 2023, there appeared to be a noticeable shift; he seemed somewhat more joyful, more self-assured, and gradually returning to his usual self.
"Entering this season, for reasons unknown, that appears to have faded."
Schiff is of the opinion that the partnership between Hamilton and Mercedes is bound to decline.
"She further mentioned how this situation wouldn’t be easy for Lewis to deal with. It was evident from their interaction in Monaco, where there was noticeable tension and Lewis made a bold claim that he would surpass George in qualifying for the upcoming season."
"It's uncertain whether an entirely new dimension or mental factor is emerging from what amounts to a split between Lewis and the team. This situation will unfold over the course of the season. Naturally, he'll be excluded from critical discussions, with George becoming the team's favored member in this regard."
"These developments are likely to sow seeds of uncertainty among the team members and within Lewis himself. Questions arise about the strategy being employed. Is Lewis fully engaged, or has he already mentally moved on? It appears both parties are eager to do their utmost. There's a prevailing feeling from both Mercedes and Lewis that they aim to conclude this chapter on a positive note.
"The admiration is undoubtedly present, yet when uncertainty begins to emerge, the question remains whether you can sustain that connection with the team. It surely must be challenging."
