Hamilton Hails W15’s Massive Improvement: Mercedes Shines with Best Qualifying at British Grand Prix
'Huge improvement' – Lewis Hamilton describes the enhanced performance of the W15 as "superior in all aspects"
Lewis Hamilton details the overall enhancements of Mercedes' W15 following its latest series of upgrades.
Lewis Hamilton has expressed that the Mercedes W15 Formula 1 vehicle has shown improvements in every aspect, contributing to the team's top qualifying performance of the year during the British Grand Prix, reports Lewis Larkam from Silverstone.
In an exhilarating qualifying session at Silverstone that saw conditions switch from wet to dry, George Russell led a top-three sweep by British drivers. He secured pole position, edging out his teammate, the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, by a mere 0.171 seconds, while Lando Norris of McLaren rounded out the podium in third place
Mercedes has seen significant advancements in improving their challenging W15 recently, thanks to a vigorous effort in development, marked by a series of enhancements made to their vehicle.
In response to a question about the changes in the W15 from the beginning of the season, Hamilton stated, “There's a significant difference.”
When pressed for specifics on the discrepancies, Hamilton responded, “In every aspect. It has simply improved in all areas.
"In Bahrain, for instance, the car's performance was dreadful, and we made significant strides in adjusting and refining the vehicle to maximize the aerodynamics package.
This team has consistently succeeded in enhancing performance, yet the specific areas where that performance is applied, especially with the current generation of vehicle, have remained a significant inquiry, including the sources of its downforce.
The team of engineers at the factory has performed exceptionally well. However, it's clear that there's still a gap. Though we're satisfied with where we stand currently, it's evident that Red Bull, especially with Max, alongside McLaren, poses a significant challenge due to their remarkable speed.
"In a sense, during the previous competition, it was evident they had a significant lead over us. Therefore, I'm optimistic that given tomorrow's circumstances, we'll be able to maintain our position."
Securing his second pole position of the year, just one week following Mercedes' inaugural victory since 2022, Russell emphasized that the team has successfully discovered the "ideal balance" for their vehicle.
"He elaborated that they have implemented minor modifications that have resulted in significant improvements. He noted that from the beginning of this year, the fundamental quality of this car is greatly superior to that of past years.
"However, we transitioned from contending with a car prone to oversteering last year, to dealing with understeering issues this year. But recently, we've managed to adjust and strike a perfect balance."
"Once the equilibrium is finely tuned and the tire temperatures hit the optimal range, there's a remarkable improvement in lap times. Even though the adjustments were minor, they've had a significant impact on performance."
