George Russell Clears the Air on ‘Hot-Headed’ Radio Complaint Towards Lewis Hamilton in Spanish GP Qualifying
George Russell clarifies his critique of Lewis Hamilton during team radio communication in qualifying.
George Russell has revealed details about his radio grievance directed at Lewis Hamilton during the F1 qualifying round at the Spanish Grand Prix.
In the third quarter, Russell appeared to be annoyed with Hamilton following their initial attempts.
He exclaimed, "What on earth was Lewis doing getting ready for that lap?"
Marcus Dudley, his race engineer, responded: "It's okay. We'll discuss it later. Stay focused."
Russell later clarified that his initial frustration stemmed from Hamilton's attempt to draft behind Esteban Ocon's Alpine.
"Lewis had a significant lead over me, yet we were both targeting the same driver to catch a slipstream at the start of the lap," he shared with a chosen group of press, including Crash.net.
"I was paying attention to my mirrors to ensure I didn't block Ocon, and when I next checked, Lewis was directly ahead of me attempting to slipstream off Ocon. In moments like that, when you're pushing to perform your best, it's easy to become a bit heated, but in the end, there was no real advantage or disadvantage from the situation."
Mercedes had an excellent qualifying session, achieving third place with Hamilton and fourth place with Russell in the starting lineup.
Reflecting on the qualifying round, Russell didn't find it unexpected to be competing for the pole position.
"Definitely. That was the common sentiment among us," Russell stated. "The car has been performing exceptionally. Historically speaking, we've had good outcomes at this venue. However, the distance to Lando and Max turned out to be somewhat larger than anticipated.
"I believe Lewis and I didn't quite nail the lap perfectly. The laps were decent. On such a track, it's all about getting the tyres to perform optimally, and that's where you pick up those additional tenths. Lando succeeded in doing that today, whereas we fell short. Securing the third and fourth positions, though, puts us in a strong position for the competition tomorrow."
Mercedes holds a significant edge in the front-line battle, equipped with two vehicles in contention.
Russell believes Mercedes will have a shot at victory come Sunday.
"He mentioned that on a track like this, it's always the speed of the car that prevails. He believes that although there's significant wear on the tires, which allows for strategic plays, at the end of the day, having even a slight advantage in speed will trump any unique strategic moves."
"We're going to give it a shot. I'm optimistic that we have the speed needed to challenge both Max and Lando. I truly believe we possess the speed necessary to contend with them for the win."
