George Russell Admits to Costly First-Lap Misjudgement at Italian GP, Reflects on Unpredictable F1 Season Dynamics
George Russell acknowledges fault for a detrimental error on the first lap at the Italian Grand Prix.
"I sustained some damage, I believe, in the subsequent corner with Max. It's uncertain what the outcome might have been."
George Russell has acknowledged his significant error in judgment during the first lap of the Italian Grand Prix, accepting complete blame for the incident.
Russell encountered damage in the initial lap of the Monza race while rebounding from his detour off the track at Turn 1.
The driver of the Mercedes veered off into the escape zone and merged back onto the track near Max Verstappen.
Russell disclosed that after a slight collision with Verstappen at the following turn, he suffered damage, necessitating a change of his front wing subsequently.
Looking back at the first lap at Monza, Russell mentioned, "The initial lap was primarily where I lost ground. It was an error in judgment on my part.
Oscar's approach was sudden. He applied the brakes sooner than I had anticipated.
"As soon as I responded by slamming on the brakes, the entire vehicle seized up. My only option was to swerve to prevent a collision. I believe the car sustained some damage during the subsequent turn with Max. It's uncertain what the outcome could have been."
"However, I believe we wouldn't have been able to match the pace of the McLarens. Charles was also quick."
Regarding Mercedes' competitors, Ferrari had a successful weekend, with Charles Leclerc executing an outstanding one-stop strategy.
Russell acknowledged that it’s impossible to predict which teams will excel in a race, admitting that "nobody really knows what's happening."
"He further commented on their remarkable performance. "When we had a conversation with the Ferrari team on Sunday morning at Zandvoort, they seemed confused and at a loss. Despite that, they managed to secure a podium finish and then went on to claim victory here!
"Red Bull has seen a significant drop in their performance levels. It's unclear what exactly is happening in Formula 1…"
