Fuel Fiasco at Japanese MotoGP: Zarco’s Near Miss with Quartararo in Final Corner Drama
Johann Zarco "narrowly avoided" a collision with Quartararo after he exhausted his fuel supply.
"Fabio's bike ran dry at the final turn. I nearly collided with him."
Following 20 laps closely behind Fabio Quartararo's Yamaha, Johann Zarco unexpectedly ascended to eleventh position after his fellow countryman's motorcycle ran out of fuel just before the finish line at Sunday's Japanese MotoGP.
In the final moments, the two French riders were pursuing Jack Miller and Aleix Espargaro when suddenly Quartararo's bike lost power just as they came out of the last turn, causing Zarco to dodge around the faltering M1.
"Zarco mentioned, “For the majority of the race, I was trailing Fabio, but I couldn’t increase my speed since the front tyre pressure was slightly too high, which made it difficult to decelerate the bike.”
"I was also aware that we would be able to overtake Aleix and Miller in the final laps, but finding the opportunity to pass them was challenging."
Just as we were rounding the final bend, Fabio's vehicle abruptly ran out of gas. I was right on his tail, narrowly avoiding a collision with him.
"I ended up in 11th place due to his fuel shortage."
This indicated that Zarco was not just the foremost rider among those on Honda bikes but also the premier racer for a domestic Japanese brand.
"Securing the 11th spot pleases me. It's a solid goal for us and brings valuable points," Zarco expressed.
"We have advanced to a more favorable category than where we were at the start of the year."
"We continue to lack speed and aren't effectively utilizing the rear tire at the appropriate time."
"I'm unsure about the future strategies for enhancement, but I'm optimistic about performing better in upcoming races compared to the start of the season."
Zarco holds the 17th position in the world championship standings, leading as the foremost Honda competitor. He is one rank and eight points in front of his teammate Takaaki Nakagami, who secured the 13th position in Sunday's race.
