Frustration at Monza: Hamilton Furious Over Qualifying ‘Weakness’ and Missed Pole Opportunity
Lewis Hamilton was extremely angry due to a perceived vulnerability in the qualifying round
Lewis Hamilton believed he had a strong chance to compete for the top spot at Monza.
Lewis Hamilton expresses intense frustration with his qualifying round at the F1 Italian Grand Prix.
The seven-time world champion secured the sixth spot on the starting grid for Sunday's race at Monza, finishing merely 0.186 seconds behind the pole position. His teammate, George Russell, outperformed him to secure third place.
Hamilton, having led in two out of three practice rounds, firmly believed he could have vied for a top spot on the starting grid but admitted that he was solely responsible for not achieving that.
"Extremely angry. I had the chance to be in the lead," Hamilton expressed to Sky. "I could have easily secured a spot on the first row at the very least. Ultimately, I didn't accomplish what was needed.
I dropped one and a half tenths during the first and second turns, and then I shed an additional tenth at the final corner. The responsibility lies solely with me.
"I've been struggling with qualifying for a while and still haven't been able to solve it. I'll continue to work on it."
In response to a question about his recovery strategy for the upcoming Sunday grand prix following a setback, Hamilton stated, "I'll likely spend the next few hours being a bit hard on myself."
In the end, I need to progress. Our race car is excellent, and the team has performed incredibly well this weekend.
"The vehicle's performance has significantly improved since the previous race, and the team merits more favorable outcomes. Perhaps they'll achieve that with Kimi [Antonelli]."
This signifies the twelfth occasion in the season's sixteen races where Russell has qualified ahead of Hamilton.
Hamilton feels he stands no chance of competing for the win in Sunday's grand prix.
"The opportunity to compete for a race victory is no longer possible, and tomorrow I need to focus on making up as much ground as possible to see if I can overtake the Ferraris and aim for a spot on the podium," he continued.
