Front Wing Finesse: McLaren’s Edge Over Red Bull in the F1 Constructors’ Battle
Christian Horner points out crucial aspect where McLaren has gained an advantage over Red Bull
"When you examine the angle of the front wings on the McLaren and Mercedes cars, you'll notice a significant difference."
Christian Horner is of the opinion that the front wing represents a crucial aspect where competitors of Red Bull have gained some ground in terms of performance lately.
Red Bull faced their most significant loss in a while as Lando Norris took a commanding victory at the Dutch Grand Prix, finishing more than 20 seconds ahead.
The outcome of Sunday's race puts their lead in the constructors' championship at risk, as it has been reduced to a mere 30 points ahead of McLaren.
Max Verstappen faced difficulties controlling the RB20, noting that in several turns he couldn't maneuver the vehicle as he managed to clinch a second-place finish, surpassing Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.
A significant topic of conversation this year has revolved around the front wing.
At the Belgian Grand Prix, the FIA tightened enforcement on the use of flexible front wings by implementing more rigorous video inspections, amid speculations that Mercedes might have been taking advantage of this aspect.
During a media briefing at Zandvoort on Sunday, which was attended by outlets such as Crash.net, Horner pointed out that one key area where McLaren and Mercedes have gained an edge is in the design of the front wing
"He believes that the question lies in where rivals have gained an edge, suggesting that the front wing is a significant area where competitors have managed to enhance their performance," he stated.
"I believe the utilization of the front wings is notably distinct. Observing the angle of the front wings on both McLaren and Mercedes, you'll see they diverge considerably. They stand out significantly from the rest of the competitors on the grid."
Horner firmly believes that McLaren has become the new standard to aim for, and he acknowledges that there are no quick fixes for Red Bull to overcome their current difficulties.
He elaborated, saying, “Definitely, McLaren is leading the way at the moment. It's evident they have the speed advantage. This has been the case for the past few races. Especially in Hungary, they showed great competitiveness. At Spa, Mercedes took the lead. But here, Lando especially stood out with his exceptional performance.
"Without a doubt, they currently possess the swiftest vehicle. We need to counter this. Clearly, it isn’t overly complicated; there are no miraculous solutions in this field. It all comes down to comprehending the issue, tackling it, and then applying solutions to resolve it."
