From F1 to IndyCar: Angela Cullen Opens Up About Her Unexpected Motorsport Comeback and New Role Post-Hamilton Split
Angela Cullen shares her unexpected comeback to racing, post her departure from Lewis Hamilton's F1 team
Angela Cullen discusses her latest position in IndyCar following her exit from Formula 1 at the beginning of 2023.
Angela Cullen revealed that she didn't anticipate a comeback to racing after parting ways with Lewis Hamilton the previous year.
Cullen played a crucial role within Hamilton's close-knit team, serving as his physical therapist.
She frequently appeared alongside Hamilton throughout race weekends, serving as a member of the support team for the seven-time world champion.
Nevertheless, their paths diverged at the onset of the 2023 Formula 1 season.
Since that time, Cullen has been spotted in the IndyCar pit area, collaborating with fellow New Zealander Marcus Armstrong.
During a discussion on IndyCar's official YouTube channel, Cullen revealed details about her latest project after leaving Formula 1.
"After exiting Formula 1, I believed I was stepping away from racing," she remarked. "In fact, I had retired, so last year I decided to take a break. Later, I got in touch with Marcus Armstrong and began to assist him with mental strategies and other support roles."
"Our values align closely. We both possess a strong drive and a competitive nature, and I felt genuinely thrilled to find out he shared those traits upon meeting him."
"That's the moment we clicked, and he asked, ‘Would you like to attend a race?’ and my response was, ‘Absolutely, I'd be thrilled to.’"
IndyCar stands as the premier racing series in the United States, featuring former Formula 1 talents like Romain Grosjean and Marcus Ericsson among its competitors.
Cullen has a strong passion for the IndyCar paddock scene and has remained involved since initially teaming up with Armstrong.
"She also mentioned getting into IndyCar. "It's really exciting. Interestingly, there were no spectators at Therma, which was quite surprising, yet I absolutely adored it," she shared.
"The competition is phenomenal, the racers are outstanding, and I was astonished by the skill level of everyone involved in the racing area – so once I got there, I stayed."
