Ferrari Reverts to Imola-Spec F1 Car at British Grand Prix After Recent Upgrade Falls Flat
Ferrari abandons latest F1 enhancement after failing to discover any "additional performance," aiming to rectify issues for the upcoming British Grand Prix.
Carlos Sainz has revealed that Ferrari has returned to using their Imola-spec setup, dropping the recent enhancements they debuted in Barcelona, following the qualifying round for the F1 British Grand Prix.
After launching a significant update in Spain a month ago, Ferrari has seen a regression in their performance.
Their issues with instability at high velocities have reemerged, leading to a decline in their competitive ranking.
In recent events, Ferrari has solidly positioned itself as the fourth-quickest team in Formula 1, following Mercedes' notable comeback.
At Silverstone, the narrative was alike, however, on this occasion, Sainz found himself bested in the qualifying rounds by Haas's Nico Hulkenberg, while Charles Leclerc saw his run end in Q2.
Addressing the press in the Silverstone paddock, where Crash.net is in attendance, Sainz discussed the move to return to an earlier specification.
"Sainz clarified that the adjustment hasn't enhanced our speed; instead, it has slightly improved our consistency at high speeds by reducing the floor's bounce. This makes the car more stable and predictable when moving quickly, which is crucial, even though it doesn't necessarily move us ahead or behind competitively, just makes the performance more uniform," Sainz stated.
Sainz disclosed that going back to the previous upgrade was an obvious choice, as the new modification caused too much bouncing during the fast turns at Silverstone.
"Indeed, in this manner. Since the year's start, we've experienced some fluctuations, which continues to be a fundamental vulnerability," he further elaborated.
"However, it's evident that the recent version was inferior to its predecessor at Silverstone, in my opinion."
Leclerc commented on Ferrari's adjustments to their setup for the qualifying session.
He stated, "The improvement was slight, but it was the primary factor in our decision to revert to the previous setup."
The driver from Monaco, having closed the gap to within 40 points of Max Verstappen following his victory in his home race, is optimistic that Ferrari will make the correct strategic moves to enhance their performance in the future.
"Without delving deeply into specifics, it's clear that our performance has dipped since Monaco, and we're currently investigating the reasons," he further explained. "This is the primary reason behind all the testing we're conducting."
"After deliberating, we decided that returning this weekend was the best option, mainly due to the benefits it offered. We're close to making a future-oriented decision very soon. The actions we took yesterday have significantly aided us in making an informed choice moving forward."
