Ferrari Fined €5000 for Tire Mix-Up on Leclerc’s Car During F1 Canadian Grand Prix Practice
Ferrari Incurs €5000 Penalty for Odd Mistake with Charles Leclerc’s Tyres
Ferrari faces a penalty for incorrectly mounting the wrong set of tyres on Charles Leclerc's vehicle during the second free practice session (FP2).
Ferrari incurred a penalty of €5000 due to a mistake involving the tires on Charles Leclerc's vehicle in the second practice session at the F1 Canadian Grand Prix.
During the second practice session at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Friday, Leclerc experienced an unusual incident when his Ferrari team urgently instructed him to return to the pit.
Leclerc was initially puzzled and reached out to his team, thinking there might be an issue, but Ferrari clarified that everything was fine and instructed him to pit regardless.
Subsequently, it was displayed on the screen that officials were investigating a situation concerning Leclerc's Ferrari.
The investigation was initiated due to his Ferrari being equipped with intermediate tyres prior to the official declaration of wet conditions on the track by the FIA.
According to the sporting rules of Formula 1, "Intermediate […] tires are permitted for use exclusively once the race director has officially announced the track conditions to be wet during any practice sessions."
The officials concluded that the rules were violated and imposed a €5000 penalty on Ferrari.
"The panel listened to the representative from the team and examined footage," their decision stated.
Vehicle number 16 exited the pit area on mixed-condition tires at the start of the session, even though the track was not officially classified as wet, and came back to the pit after completing a single lap.
"This is a violation of Article 30.5 l), which allows the utilization of intermediate or wet weather tires solely after the race director has announced the track as wet."
Leclerc secured the third-highest speed in the initial practice, which was affected by rain, then recorded the fourth-fastest time in a momentarily dry period during the second session.
