Fernando Alonso Claims Ferrari Had the Fastest Car in Singapore, Says They ‘Should Have Won
Fernando Alonso has made an unexpected statement, asserting that Ferrari "should have won" in Singapore. According to him, Ferrari had the quickest car at the event.
Fernando Alonso has unexpectedly asserted that Ferrari "ought to have clinched victory" at the Singapore Grand Prix.
Ferrari had a tough time during the qualifying session at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, managing to place only ninth and tenth on the starting grid.
Charles Leclerc erred during his Q3 attempt due to his tyres not being adequately warmed up, while Carlos Sainz had an accident at the last set of turns.
On the day of the race, Leclerc managed to climb up to fifth position after being held up by Alonso and Nico Hulkenberg.
Following an early pit stop, Sainz advanced to seventh place, successfully overtaking several midfield competitors, among them Alonso.
After the race in Singapore, Alonso stated that Ferrari had the "quickest car this weekend."
Alonso remarked to Motorsport.com that the Ferraris were expected to win this race because they were the quickest cars on the track this weekend.
Regarding Alonso's performance in the race, the Spanish driver secured a respectable eighth place by overtaking Hulkenberg during the pit stops.
Alonso thinks that Aston Martin was "fortunate" to earn points in Singapore, pointing out the challenges he experienced with the car's handling.
"Typically, spots nine and ten are open just behind the leading four teams and ahead of Checo. Securing eighth place surpasses our most optimistic expectations,” he mentioned.
"Though there were some positives, we were still trailing by a lap and struggling with the car's performance throughout the weekend. Honestly, we were fortunate to score points; it could just as easily have been a 15th place finish with the same issues."
"I believe our positions should be 15th and 16th. Currently, we are in eighth place, trailing a Ferrari by two seconds. Therefore, I'm uncertain if I can improve further."
Aston Martin is securely positioned in fifth place in the Formula 1 constructors' standings.
