Farewell Ricciardo: Red Bull Confirms Liam Lawson as Replacement for 2024 Season
Daniel Ricciardo’s departure from F1 is confirmed as he hands over his RB seat to Liam Lawson
RB has announced that Daniel Ricciardo will not be completing the remainder of the 2024 F1 season.
Red Bull has announced that Liam Lawson will take over for Daniel Ricciardo for the remainder of the 2024 Formula 1 season.
This decision, anticipated after indications suggested that Singapore would be Ricciardo's emotional F1 farewell, will be implemented starting from the United States Grand Prix.
Red Bull has decided to remove Ricciardo from their roster, concluding the 35-year-old Australian's 257-race career over 14 seasons, during which he secured eight grand prix victories.
This situation forces Ricciardo to come to terms with the fact that his "fairytale" dream of rejoining the main Red Bull team, which he departed from in late 2018, is practically unattainable.
In what is probably his last move in Formula 1, he helped Max Verstappen's quest for a fourth consecutive world title by taking the fastest lap point from McLaren's Lando Norris in Singapore.
"On behalf of everyone at VCARB, team principal Laurent Mekies expressed gratitude for Daniel's dedicated efforts over the past two seasons."
"He has contributed immensely to the team with his wealth of experience and skill, coupled with an excellent attitude that has been instrumental in fostering strong team cohesion. Daniel has consistently shown himself to be a gentleman, both in competitive settings and outside of them, always wearing a smile."
"His absence will be deeply felt, yet he will forever remain an integral part of the Red Bull community."
Red Bull's reserve driver Lawson will step into the open RB seat next to Yuki Tsunoda, who has shown better performance than Ricciardo during their time as teammates.
The young 22-year-old racer from New Zealand filled in for Red Bull at five races last year after Daniel Ricciardo injured his hand in a crash just two races into his return to Formula 1.
During his short stint in F1 in 2023, Lawson made a strong impression and now has an opportunity to argue for a potential Red Bull seat, especially with Sergio Perez's future after this season still up in the air. "I also want to take this moment to welcome Liam," Mekies commented. "He is already familiar with our team. He raced for us last season and handled challenging situations effectively, so it should be an easy adjustment for him.”
"It’s exciting to witness emerging talent from the Red Bull team advance to the next level. We’re eager to concentrate on the remainder of the season as a united group.”
