Following the European elections held from June 6 to June 9, the European Parliament convened in Strasbourg on Tuesday to begin its 10th legislative session.
Roberta Metsola (EVP, MT), the outgoing President of the European Parliament, initiated the session. Following a musical interlude, Pina Picierno (S&D, IT), the second Vice-President of the outgoing Parliament, announced the candidates for the Parliament Presidency. The election, conducted through a secret ballot, commenced right after the session opened. Eight members of parliament, chosen by lot, are responsible for overseeing the process.
The candidates are Roberta Metsola from the European People's Party (EPP, Malta) and Irene Montero from The Left (Spain). Prior to the vote, both made brief statements in front of the assembly.
To be elected, a candidate must secure an absolute majority of the valid votes cast, which means 50% plus one vote. If no candidate is elected in the first round, the same or different candidates can be nominated under the same conditions for a second round of voting. If necessary, a third round can be conducted following the same rules. If no candidate is elected in the third round, the two candidates with the highest number of votes in the third round proceed to a fourth and final round, where the candidate with the most votes wins.
Following the election, the newly elected president assumes the leadership role and may deliver an inaugural address.
New Legislators
Lena Schilling, a 23-year-old from Austria and a member of the Greens/EFA group, is the youngest representative. On the other hand, Leoluca Orlando from Italy, who is also part of the Greens/EFA group and is 77 years old, holds the title of the oldest representative. The average age of all the representatives is 50 years.
At the start of the tenth legislative term, there are now eight parliamentary groups, which is an increase of one compared to the previous term. Additionally, 32 deputies remain without party affiliation.
