The European Union must make every effort to guarantee that Edmundo González Urrutia, who has been legitimately and democratically elected as President of Venezuela, is able to assume his position on January 10, 2025.
On Thursday, September 19, a resolution was passed with 309 votes in favor, 201 against, and 12 abstentions, in which Parliament emphatically denounced and completely rejected the electoral fraud orchestrated by the National Electoral Council, which is controlled by the regime and refused to disclose the official results. Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) acknowledge Edmundo González Urrutia as the rightful and democratically elected president of the country, and María Corina Machado as the head of the democratic forces in Venezuela. They also vehemently condemn the Venezuelan Government for issuing an arrest warrant for Mr. González.
Members of the European Parliament emphasize that the Venezuelan government has ignored multiple appeals from the global community to adhere to the 2023 Barbados Agreement, which was negotiated between President Maduro's administration and the opposition. This non-compliance has rendered the possibility of a free and fair presidential election unattainable.
Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) highlight that international election observation missions have unequivocally indicated that the Venezuelan presidential election held on July 28, 2024, did not adhere to global standards for fair elections. They strongly denounce the killings, intimidation, rights abuses, and detentions inflicted upon the democratic opposition, Venezuelan citizens, and civil organizations, demanding an immediate halt to ongoing human rights abuses.
The Parliament has called on the European Union to reimpose sanctions on the National Electoral Council's members. It also recommends extending the current regime sanctions and broadening their reach to include targeted measures against Nicolás Maduro and his close associates under the EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime.
Members of the European Parliament express appreciation for the involvement of the Brazilian, Colombian, and Mexican governments and call on regional players and the global community to apply intense pressure on Maduro's administration and his associates to honor the democratic choice of the Venezuelan populace, acknowledging Edmundo González Urrutia as the rightful and democratically elected President. The Parliament cautions that failure to do so could trigger another wave of migration to neighboring countries, akin to the recent exodus of nearly eight million Venezuelans.
