Impacts of severe weather in central and eastern Europe
President Metsola remarked on the severe weather and flooding that have wreaked havoc in Poland, Hungary, Austria, Romania, Czechia, Slovakia, and Germany, as well as the significant damage caused by major fires in Portugal. She expressed sympathy for those who have lost family members and homes, those who are missing, and the first responders and others still fighting the disasters. She emphasized that the EU needs to contribute and persist in taking all necessary actions to provide assistance.
Second anniversary of Jina Mahsa Amini's death
Two years following the tragic killing of Jina Mahsa Amini in Iran, the Parliament expresses its solidarity with the courageous women and men who persist in their struggle for equality, dignity, and freedom, stated President Metsola. She affirmed that the Parliament will persist in supporting those who, even while imprisoned, risk their lives to sustain the movement. Parliament pays tribute to her memory and all who have sacrificed for freedom, she concluded.
A moment of silence held in honor of Predrag Fred Matić
Members of the European Parliament observed a moment of silence to honor MEP Predrag Fred Matić, who died on August 23. The President remarked that Matić was a staunch advocate for social justice, human rights, and equality, significantly impacting policies and lives.
