Lexus LX700h Overtrail (2024): A Rugged Luxury SUV for the American Market

Lexus is finally electrifying its premier SUV offering with an added off-road edition

Lexus has revealed the performance details of its LX700h model. The hybrid system boasts a total output of 463 horsepower and a torque of 790 Nm. These figures significantly surpass the total power output of the Tundra i-Force Max previously mentioned in the article. Lexus estimates that the hybrid LX will achieve 20 miles per gallon in the combined EPA cycle, which translates to approximately 11.7 liters per 100 kilometers.

The Overtrail equipment package in the United States will be available exclusively for the LX700h model, which comes with the option of two or three rows of seating. The LX 2025 is set to launch in the U.S. at the beginning of next year, with pricing details to be announced just before it hits the market.

After nearly three decades in the market, the Lexus LX has finally gone electric. This fourth-generation luxury SUV introduces a new 700h model, which is the crown jewel of the lineup. While numerous hybrid vehicles have shrunk in size over recent years, the LX bucks the trend. It maintains its 3.4-liter V6 engine with twin turbocharging and features a parallel hybrid system.

A motor generator with a clutch has been integrated between the combustion engine and the 10-speed automatic transmission. Unlike prior Lexus models featuring a parallel hybrid system, the LX 700h is equipped with both an alternator and a starter, which are crucial in the event of a hybrid system failure. Should such a failure occur, the large SUV will continue to operate using only the gasoline engine.

This can occur due to the alternator charging the auxiliary 12V battery, which in turn allows the starter to independently ignite the engine. Even in this situation, the LX 700h's Low-Range mode remains operational, as do the traction control and the air suspension's Active Height Control system, which automatically adjusts the vehicle's ride height.

To maintain the off-road capabilities of the LX, Lexus has engineered a waterproof structure to safeguard the hybrid battery. It is positioned at the rear section of the floor, which also houses a waterproof tray divided into upper and lower sections. Despite the addition of new electric components, the vehicle can still traverse through water up to 70 centimeters deep.

In addition to other features, the new Overtrail equipment comes standard with front and rear differential locks, enhancing the central differential lock. Depending on the market, the off-road version of the LX700h is equipped with either 265/70 R18 all-terrain tires or 265/65 R18 mud and snow tires. The LX700h isn't the inaugural Lexus model to undergo the Overtrail upgrade; the GX received a similar update last year, with the NX following suit a few months back.

Lexus LX 700h becomes

In addition to the hybrid system, there are other significant modifications being made. The engine mounts have been upgraded to handle the extra weight of the powertrain. Lexus has also installed a new cross member and repositioned the spare tire to make room for the battery beneath the rear floor. Speaking of rearranging space, the 12-volt auxiliary battery has been moved to the side of the rear deck, away from the engine compartment. The radiator support is now more rigid and the dashboard has been reinforced as well.

But wait, there's more. The updated version of the LX includes a fresh 12.3-inch digital dashboard, reimagined front seats, and an enhanced wireless pad with quick charging capabilities. Moreover, a waterproof inverter located beneath the center console allows for an external power supply of up to 2,400 watts. There are also outlets available to power devices or to turn the vehicle into an emergency power source.

The 700h also boasts a feature known as the Electro-Shiftmatic System, marking a first for a Lexus off-road vehicle. Originally coined by Toyota in 2003 for the Prius' Shift-by-Wire system, this innovation in the electrified LX offers a "unique gear shift that combines a comfortable grip with superior usability."

The refreshed LX series, along with the latest addition, the 700h, will gradually hit the market towards the end of the year. The pricing for the hybrid model has not been disclosed yet, but anticipate paying a premium over the LX600. In the United States, the gasoline version's price starts at $93,915, going up to $134,490.
