Eddie Jordan Warns Mercedes: Replacing Lewis Hamilton with Rookie Kimi Antonelli a “Mistake” and “Unfair Pressure”
Mercedes has been advised that substituting Lewis Hamilton with Kimi Antonelli would be "unjust and erroneous."
"Such action would subject him to immense pressure," Mercedes has been cautioned.
Mercedes is poised to err in selecting a successor for Lewis Hamilton.
According to Eddie Jordan, the ex-Formula 1 team leader, there are concerns for the novice driver expected to fill Hamilton's position.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the young prodigy rising through the Mercedes hierarchy, is broadly expected to make his move into Formula 1 in the upcoming season.
Mercedes has not yet announced the successor for Hamilton, who is set to join Ferrari.
"Jordan believes he'll choose Antonelli, although he considers it a misstep," he shared on his Formula For Success podcast.
"You are exerting tremendous stress on him."
"Mercedes ought to be contending for a constructors' title while continuing to support Antonelli, aligning with Toto's aspirations."
"Thrusting him into the spotlight, like a rabbit caught in the headlights… it's simply not right. It's unjust."
"Currently, his performance in Formula 2 doesn't inspire confidence that he's prepared to secure victories in grands prix or handle the stress that comes with racing for Mercedes."
At just 17, Italian racer Antonelli skipped over F3, diving directly into his debut season in F2 this year.
He has secured a victory in both a sprint race and a feature race to date.
However, Mercedes leader Toto Wolff has often praised Antonelli's exceptional abilities.
Only three spots are left to fill in the 2025 Formula 1 roster (Sauber, Red Bull, and Mercedes), and there aren't any notable contenders left to take over Hamilton's position.
Wolff's confidence in Antonelli appears poised to lead to the young driver stepping in to continue Hamilton's legacy starting in 2025.
