Dual 10/10 Performances Illuminate British GP: Hamilton and Hulkenberg Shine at Silverstone
Evaluations of British Grand Prix F1 Drivers: Silverstone Awards Two Perfect Scores
Crash.net evaluates performance after the 2024 British Grand Prix F1 race.
Lewis Hamilton – 10
In the face-off during qualifying, Hamilton found himself outpaced by Russell, yet he showcased exceptional skill in the race, securing his 104th career win. He outperformed Russell as the weather shifted, making a pivotal move to slick tyres that allowed him to overtake Norris. Additionally, his handling of the soft tyres was impressive.
Max Verstappen – 9
Verstappen consistently maximizes the performance of the RB20. Ideally, a fifth-place finish was expected for Verstappen, but impressively, he secured a second-place finish. The strategy decisions were spot-on, with Verstappen playing a significant role in their execution.
Lando Norris – 8.5
A pivotal moment for Norris came with McLaren's decision to fit his car with soft tires instead of mediums during his last pit stop. Before this, he had been performing steadily, showcasing McLaren's knack for adapting well in varying weather conditions.
Oscar Piastri – 8
Piastri encountered a lost chance, not due to his own errors, but because he had to remain on the track for an additional lap when it was time to switch to slick tyres.
Carlos Sainz – 9
Considering Ferrari's vehicle was evidently the fourth strongest on the Silverstone grid, it's unfair to harshly judge Sainz. Achieving fifth place and securing the fastest lap demonstrates his ability to maximize results under the circumstances.
Nico Hulkenberg – 10
Hulkenberg, sharing the spotlight with Hamilton, was a standout performer over the weekend. He impressively outpaced a Ferrari to claim another sixth-place finish. Haas is definitely going to feel Hulkenberg's absence when he departs for Sauber next season.
Lance Stroll – 8
Stroll had a neat performance throughout the weekend, surpassing Alonso at Aston Martin's local event.
Fernando Alonso's streak of unpredictable results persisted through this weekend, with Stroll outperforming him. Considering Alonso's strong start to the season, Stroll's consistent upper hand is increasingly worrying.
Alex Albon – 8
Albon had a standout weekend, showing Williams in strong shape before their home crowd. He secured vital points, helping them advance ahead of Sauber for ninth place in the constructors' standings.
Yuki Tsunoda – 7.5
Tsunoda had a notably solid weekend, securing a point with a performance that notably outshone Ricciardo.
Logan Sargeant had one of his more impressive outings in Formula 1. He came close to making it into Q3 and battled for a place in the top 10 during the race.
Kevin Magnussen – 5.5
Considering Hulkenberg's speed, Magnussen didn't live up to expectations this time around. He was eliminated in the first qualifying round and then fell behind Sargeant during the race. It wasn't an impressive showing for him as he battles to secure his place in F1.
Daniel Ricciardo – 6
Ricciardo lagged slightly behind Tsunoda in the British Grand Prix.
Charles Leclerc – 5.5
Leclerc experienced yet another weekend to forget. His early exit during the second qualifying session was compounded by an ill-judged change to intermediate tyres. Despite Ferrari's evident struggle as the fourth quickest team at Silverstone, it's imperative that Leclerc concentrates on minimizing losses.
Valtteri Bottas scored a 6
For the first occasion in a regular qualifying session, Bottas found himself outpaced by Zhou, unable to make gains as the circuit conditions improved towards the end of Q1. His race was uneventful, beginning on medium tires, then changing to intermediates, and finally back to dry tires, all at opportune moments.
Esteban Ocon – 6
It was a challenging weekend for Alpine, with Ocon experiencing regret over several strategy calls during qualifying. His performance in the race also fell short of expectations, primarily because he was among those who opted for intermediate tires prematurely.
Sergio Perez's streak of poor performances persisted at the Silverstone Circuit, where he was eliminated in the first qualifying session once again. This occurrence was the result of a mishap at Copse Corner during a warm-up lap. Similar to Leclerc, making an early transition to intermediate tires did not yield the desired results, leading to him being overtaken twice.
Zhou Guanyu – 5.5
For the first occasion this year, excluding sprint qualifying events, Zhou managed to qualify ahead of his teammate Bottas. However, his decision to start the race on soft tires did not pay off, leading to a significant drop in his position. Eventually, this strategy compelled him into a…
George Russell – 8
Russell truly impressed during the qualifying rounds, securing his third career pole position. Although he initially seemed at ease on a dry track, his performance dipped as the race went on, further affected by the delay of waiting behind Hamilton for a switch to intermediate tires.
Pierre Gasly – Not Applicable
Considering the severe 50-place grid sanction Gasly faced, along with his failure to start at Silverstone, it's not reasonable to assess his performance over the weekend.
