Jorge Martin forfeited his lead in the MotoGP championship after a crash during the second-to-last lap of the German Grand Prix.
Martin's unexpected mistake not only gave Francesco Bagnaia the win and the lead in the world championship, but it also allowed both Marquez brothers to secure places on the podium.
Despite Marc's streak of undefeated Sundays at Sachsenring coming to an end, he showcased great determination by advancing from 13th place to secure 2nd. Meanwhile, his Gresini teammate Alex closely followed him across the finish line.
In contrast to Saturday's race, Martin successfully maintained his lead position at Turn 1, despite facing some challenge from Miguel Oliveira. Oliveira, who had secured second place and celebrated the Trackhouse team’s inaugural Sprint podium on Saturday, put up some resistance.
Defending champion Bagnaia, who regretted his tyre-conservation strategy after initially leading in the Sprint, came out aggressively on Sunday. The official Ducati rider overtook Oliveira and Martin at the last corner on consecutive laps, moving his bike numbered #1 into first place by the third lap of the 30-lap race.
Martin, who managed to narrowly defeat Bagnaia by a mere 0.064 seconds last year, held on to second place. He faced some challenging attempts by his fast teammate, Franco Morbidelli, but ultimately made a decisive move to overtake Bagnaia at Turn 1 during the 7th lap.
The Spanish rider quickly accelerated, and things went from bad to worse for Bagnaia as Morbidelli executed the same maneuver as Martin, pushing the current champion down to third place.
However, Bagnaia wasn't finished yet. As the race entered its second half, he returned to lapping in the 1 minute 20 second range and overtook Morbidelli.
Martin had built a lead of 1.2 seconds, which explained why Bagnaia was pushing hard. Bagnaia managed to reduce the gap to half a second with 10 laps remaining, but he still couldn't get close enough to overtake…
The relentless pressure seemed to yield results when Martin dramatically lost control at the slow Turn 1 on the second-to-last lap, causing him to skid into the gravel.
The battle for the last spot on the podium was a contest between Morbidelli, Alex Marquez, Marc Marquez, and Enea Bastianini. Morbidelli, wearing the number 21, managed to hold off the Gresini riders until there were 13 laps remaining, at which point Alex Marquez smoothly moved up beside him at the bottom of the Waterfall descent.
Despite suffering from injuries to his left hand and ribs, Marc Marquez, an 11-time champion at the Sachsenring who hadn't lost a German Grand Prix since the 125cc class in 2009, managed to climb from his 13th starting position to sixth place by the halfway point of the race.
The #93 bike had a close call when Morbidelli went wide at Turn 1 and then veered back, brushing against the blue bike. This contact caused Marquez to lift out of his seat, shattering his screen and triggering his airbag.
At the last corner, with five laps remaining, Marquez overtook Morbidelli for fourth place. By that point, his younger brother Alex had established a 1.8-second lead in third position.
Marc quickly began to close the gap, appearing poised to uncomfortably push Alex off the podium. However, a mistake by Martin unexpectedly led to the two brothers becoming the first siblings to share a premier-class podium since the Aoki brothers did so in 1997.
Bastianini made his characteristic late push to secure fourth place, finishing in front of Morbidelli. Oliveira was the leading rider behind the all-Ducati top five (which would have been a top six if Martin hadn't crashed).
Newcomer Acosta's last opportunity to break Marquez's record as the youngest MotoGP race victor concluded with a seventh-place finish for GASGAS Tech3. In the final laps, he was engaged in a fierce competition with his fellow RC16 competitor, Brad Binder.
Fabio Quartararo achieved the best result for Yamaha in his milestone 100th MotoGP race, finishing in a solitary 11th place.
Following a narrow defeat to Marc Marquez in a Sprint race photo finish for sixth place, Maverick Vinales, who was also dealing with injuries from a recent highside crash, veered into the gravel while in sixth position today and ultimately ended up in 12th place.
Takaaki Nakagami emerged as the top Honda rider, finishing in 15th place and narrowly preventing Repsol Honda's Luca Marini from earning his first point of the year by a margin of 0.037 seconds.
Aleix Espargaro from Aprilia was unable to participate in the race because of the hand injury he sustained at Assen.
On Sunday, the weather was cooler compared to the Sprint, leading all riders to opt for the medium rear tyre instead of the soft one for the 30-lap race, while maintaining the hard front tyre.
Updated regulations for tyre pressure in 2024 require riders to maintain a front tyre pressure above the new minimum of 1.8 bar (previously 1.88 bar) for at least 60% of the Grand Prix distance, an increase from the previous 50%, and at least 30% of a Sprint race.
The consequence for not achieving this minimum in a Grand Prix is a 16-second time penalty added after the race, or an 8-second penalty for a Sprint or short race.
The MotoGP season now pauses for its summer break, which will last until the British Grand Prix at Silverstone scheduled for August 2-4.
