Daniel Ricciardo Faces Uncertainty and Reflection as F1 Career Hangs in the Balance
Daniel Ricciardo is uncertain about his future career plans if his stint in the "exhausting" Formula 1 comes to an end.
"If this is the conclusion and the sport continues without me, I believe I will first take some time to determine my next steps."
Daniel Ricciardo has acknowledged that if his Formula 1 career concludes after the Singapore Grand Prix last weekend, he will require "time to determine" his future professional direction.
Although Red Bull has not made an official announcement, it is anticipated that Liam Lawson will take over Daniel Ricciardo's spot for the upcoming race at the Circuit of the Americas.
The Australian driver participated in several detailed interviews following a tough race in Singapore, one of which was with F1 TV. He was notably emotional, as it could have been his last appearance in Formula 1.
In an interview with Sky Sports following the Singapore race, Ricciardo characterized Formula 1 as "tiring" while considering his future career options if he no longer has a full-time position.
"I’m not sure. It’s really draining,” he mentioned. “We’re all aware of that. It’s tiring. Honestly, if this is the end and things continue without me, I think I will take some time to decide my next steps. I am also thankful for the career I’ve had."
“Achieving entry into Formula 1 was a dream in itself, and to have been part of it for more than ten years with opportunities to compete for victories is extraordinary.
"I don’t want to reflect on my past with a sense of self-pity. It has been a wonderful experience, and perhaps it’s just something unique."
"Perhaps I'll take up mountain climbing or something similar."
Daniel Ricciardo has secured eight victories in Formula 1 and has twice ended the season ranked third in the drivers' standings.
Throughout his time with Red Bull and later with Renault, especially in 2020, Ricciardo was highly esteemed as one of the top drivers in Formula 1.
Nevertheless, becoming part of McLaren's team in 2021 marked a significant change in his career, as he faced challenges in adjusting to the car from the Woking-based team.
Looking back on his career in Formula 1, Ricciardo shared a memorable moment he had with Sir Jackie Stewart, a legendary racer who has won the world championship three times.
"At times, it seemed much easier," he recalled. "I specifically remember it was here in 2014, the year I had my big break. Sir Jackie Stewart approached me in the lobby and said something to me."
"He said to me, 'If you ever need someone to talk to, reach out because things won't always be as simple as they seem.' He was getting me ready for the tough times. At that moment, I was feeling really great. Sure, I didn't clinch the championship that year, but everything felt manageable. Well, maybe not entirely manageable, but you get the point."
"When he mentioned it to me, I was taken aback, thinking, 'I'm fine, what do you mean? I'm not having a hard time. I'm not scared of anyone. What is this about?'. Even in 2015, the next year, things were challenging. That's when I understood his point. It's important not to become overly confident or too disheartened. Stay balanced and grounded."
