SDLP chief Colum Eastwood has declared he is stepping down as the leader of the party.
Mr. Eastwood has held the position of head of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), a Northern Irish nationalist party, since his election in 2015, approaching ten years in leadership.
He stepped down only two months after winning his parliamentary seat in Foyle again, though by a narrower margin of 4,166 votes.
His party experienced significant setbacks, facing losses in both South Down and Upper Bann.

During his resignation announcement, he stated, "Politics is constantly evolving toward new challenges. My next endeavor is to create a unified new Ireland for everyone."
"I am privileged to serve as the MP for Derry, a role I am passionate about, and it was an honor to lead the SDLP. I look forward to the future with enthusiasm."
He is expected to stay on as leader until the party selects his successor, who should be announced before the party's annual conference in October.
Mr. Eastwood has declared Claire Hanna as the standout choice to succeed him.
Since her election in 2019, Ms. Hanna, representing Belfast South and Mid Down, reportedly enjoys full backing from her SDLP colleagues in the Stormont assembly.

At the age of 14 in 1998, the individual, now 41, became a member of the SDLP, motivated by the signing of the Good Friday Agreement that same year and the leadership of John Hume, who was then at the helm of the SDLP.
