Christian Horner Calls for Improvement: Red Bull Boss Urges Sergio Perez to Step Up Amid Constructors’ Championship Battle
Christian Horner encourages Sergio Perez: "We require both drivers performing at their best"
"I believe it's essential for both of our drivers to be performing at their peak."
Christian Horner, the head of Red Bull, has called on Sergio Perez to improve his performance after a lackluster showing at the Singapore Grand Prix, stating, "we require both drivers to be performing at their best."
Perez managed to secure a 10th place finish in Sunday’s race at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, wrapping up a challenging weekend for the Mexican driver.
The Red Bull racer couldn't advance to Q3 and was trapped behind Franco Colapinto for the majority of the race's first half.
The second half of the race saw Perez facing a familiar challenge, as he was unable to overtake Nico Hulkenberg.
Commenting on Perez's performance, Horner spoke to the press in Singapore: "Checo was behind Hulkenberg for almost 30 laps. He had a strong start initially. However, after qualifying poorly, he found it very challenging to make any passes."
"He found it difficult to gain grip in the crucial spots, especially coming out of Turn 3 and heading into the back straight. However, that was the best he could do today."
Red Bull fell further behind McLaren in the race for the constructors’ championship.
McLaren currently leads by 41 points with six races remaining.
It comes as no shock that Horner is expecting greater performance from Perez.
He mentioned that it was essential to have both drivers performing at their best.
"Checo performed well last weekend, but this weekend was challenging for him. We need to string together a series of strong weekends, similar to how McLaren is consistently placing both of their drivers on the podium. It's those significant points that truly matter."
"We need to ensure that we steer Checo as far away as possible from the current path, aiming to find the correct direction."
Max Verstappen had a more successful weekend, securing second place as Lando Norris clinched a commanding victory.
