China’s Semiconductor Industry Faces Setback: Dutch Government Imposes Export Controls on ASML Chip-Making Equipment
China severely impacted by fresh Dutch export restrictions on ASML chip-manufacturing machinery
The Netherlands has introduced new limitations that impact machinery utilized by numerous semiconductor factories in China.
Semiconductor manufacturers in the mainland might encounter major production hurdles, as industry insiders reveal that the Netherlands has prohibited Dutch chip tool behemoth ASML Holding from maintaining some of its most dependable machinery in China.
Just recently, Reinette Klever, the Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development, revealed an alteration to the nation's export regulations. Now, ASML must seek permits to distribute its 1970i and 1980i immersion deep ultraviolet (DUV) machines to clients in China.
Moreover, according to a Dutch government statement cited by Reuters, ASML is obligated to obtain a permit to offer maintenance services, supply spare parts, and deliver software updates for immersion lithography systems that were previously sold to Chinese customers and are now subject to restrictions.
ASML, who essentially dominates the global market for the latest chip-making tools, has announced that the modification to the rules is a "technical" one and does not foresee it affecting its financial forecast for the year. The company chose not to comment on the subject of maintaining the newly limited equipment in China when contacted by the Post.
