Charles Leclerc Warns Ferrari’s Latest Upgrade Still Falls Short for Consistent Victory Chances in 2024 F1 Season
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's latest improvements are ‘insufficient’ for ‘securing victories for the remainder of the season’
"Will it be enough to secure wins for the rest of the season? I don't believe so at this point, but we've made significant progress."
Charles Leclerc has issued a caution that Ferrari must enhance their performance to consistently compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by utilizing a one-stop strategy, allowing him to outperform McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc was trailing by five seconds, underscoring that McLaren possessed the fastest car at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major improvement package for the Italian Grand Prix, focused on resolving their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution".
"We need to proceed with care," he stated. "Following the Monaco race, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season. Monaco's track was uniquely suited to our car at that moment. Similarly, Monza has its own distinct characteristics."
“There were many straight sections and few turns. We also had a rear wing designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we introduced another upgrade that I believe has brought us closer to McLaren, though I don’t think it will make us the dominant car for the remainder of the season on different tracks.”
"I believe there's still much to be done, but I'm thrilled to have achieved this in Italy."
Even though Leclerc has faced a challenging period since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered expectations, recalling similar championship challenge discussions after his victory in Monaco.
"We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but Baku might present a completely different scenario, and Singapore will likely differ as well. Therefore, we must recalibrate our approach. We successfully adjusted from Monaco to Montreal, yet the change between those two weekends was quite significant."
The team encountered several of the toughest races of the season as we tried to figure out the issues with our car. Moving forward, we hope to avoid facing such challenging races again, and I believe we won't have to.
"However, it's crucial that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as this is unrealistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to win races for the rest of the season? I don't believe so yet, but we have definitely moved in the right direction."
