Carlos Sainz at a Crossroads: Williams or Audi’s Sauber for 2025 F1 Seat as Options Narrow
Carlos Sainz has been "gently pushed" towards one path as his choices dwindle down to an even split. "Many aspects remain uncertain concerning the 2026 rules…"
Carlos Sainz appears to have two options regarding his Formula 1 position for 2025, and he has been subtly pushed towards one of them.
Williams and Sauber, set to transition into Audi in the following year, are leading the race to secure the services of the Ferrari driver currently without a team.
Aston Martin and Red Bull have extended their contracts with Fernando Alonso and Sergio Perez, respectively, whereas Mercedes passed up the opportunity to acquire Sainz, leaving him with fewer choices.
"Natalie Pinkham expressed her fondness for the idea of returning to elevate Williams to its former glory during her conversation on the F1 Nation podcast."
"The concept of Alex and Carlos collaborating appeals to me greatly, as I believe they would make a strong team."
"It's a challenging decision, indeed a difficult one to determine."
"What is the significance of relationships? At Mercedes, James Vows has collaborated with several remarkable drivers, including Lewis Hamilton."
"He's a sharp individual. That's a major attraction for Carlos."
"He harbors grand aspirations and goals for the squad."
"I have faith in him, I'm sold on his vision and his ultimate objective for Williams.
"However, Audi shares that similarity. Andreas Seidl is an exceptional individual. It's known that they previously collaborated at McLaren and, from what I understand, they had a very good rapport there."
Tom Clarkson mentioned, "I would gently push him towards Williams."
"Given that, in my opinion, there remains a significant amount of uncertainty surrounding the regulations for 2026."
"Is an Audi team making its debut? Especially considering they're handling the power unit entirely on their own for the first time?"
"In the midst of uncertainty, a manufacturer with a proven track record of adapting to regulatory shifts successfully in the past is likely to have a faster start in 2026 compared to Audi."
"That's the path I would take."
"He seems like he would be a good fit alongside Vowles, Pat Fry, the technical director, and Albon."
Last week, during the F1 Canadian Grand Prix, Williams' team leader Vowles acknowledged that discussions have taken place regarding the potential signing of Sainz. This comes as Sainz is set to be replaced by Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari next year.
Audi has maintained a keen interest, tied to Sainz through his father, a Dakar Rally champion with the company.
