MotoGP Titleholder Shares Insights on Pedro Acosta's Accident

Francesco Bagnaia described his strategy of exerting extra effort in the initial laps of the Japanese MotoGP to fend off an aggressive move from Pedro Acosta.

On Sunday at Motegi, Bagnaia achieved a dominant win from start to finish, marking his fourth sprint/grand prix combo of 2024 and securing his eighth major race victory of the year.

Newcomer Acosta from Tech3 began in the lead but quickly met with an accident.

He recognized the crash had occurred the moment he noticed it on the dashboard, he explained.

"When my group clarified that it wasn't Pedro at the back, but rather Jorge, I comprehended the situation."

"In the initial segment of the race, I found myself exerting additional effort with Pedro. It seemed he was intensely striving to reclaim his spot, given the challenge that arises when you're within less than 0.5 seconds of the competitors ahead – managing the front becomes quite difficult."

"I believe his intention was to pass, but that's no simple task."

"Then I attempted to handle the lead over Jorge as effectively as I could. It wasn't simple since he was catching up slightly in the final laps, but ultimately, we accomplished an excellent job."

At one point, Bagnaia had nearly a two-second advantage, but Jorge Martin started closing in on his fellow Ducati rider towards the end of the race. However, an alarming moment at Turn 3 made him abandon his pursuit.

Bagnaia mentioned he was managing well, yet he expressed a desire for Martin to face similar issues with his tires.

"Bagnaia mentioned, "I felt I had everything under control, yet I was really hoping that with the lap time he clocked towards the end, he was essentially wrapping things up, as I was already in a position where I had completed everything."

"As I attempted to speed up to boost my performance, my back tire seemed to have other plans. My goal was to stay in the race and avoid falling too far behind."

Bagnaia quickly showed his speed at the Japanese race, a complete turnaround from his performance in the Indonesian GP the previous week, and he hopes this serves as a model for the remainder of the season.

"He anticipated facing greater challenges," he further noted.

"From the beginning of the weekend, our performance was seamless, and I aim to use this weekend as a benchmark for future ones. I believe we executed everything flawlessly, and our performance in today's race was exceptionally smooth and effective."

"I'm feeling joyful and would like to express my gratitude towards my team for their outstanding work. Now, let's proceed to the upcoming tasks."

Currently trailing Martin by a mere 10 points in the championship standings, with four races remaining, Bagnaia emphasizes the importance of perseverance in his quest for a third title. He remarks that 2024 marks the first occasion since his Moto2 championship victory in 2018 that he has secured eight grand prix wins within a single season.

"He emphasized the importance of having faith in it."

"We must persist without surrender. I will continually strive to perform at my highest capability."

"Securing eight victories in a single season is quite an achievement. This is a first for me, and the only other occasion I achieved this was back in 2018 in Moto2, where I also clinched eight wins. We must continue to strive and work hard."
