Audi Widens E-Tron GT Recall Over Persistent Battery Issues, Mirroring Porsche Taycan’s Troubles

Audi has initiated an additional recall for its E-Tron GT and RS E-Tron GT models due to possible battery defects that may cause short circuits and fires, as revealed by the NHTSA on Monday.

The withdrawal of 6,499 cars from the 2022-2024 production line comes after a comparable recall for the associated Porsche Taycan, which impacted more than 27,000 vehicles. The electric vehicles from Audi and Porsche are built on the Volkswagen Group's J1 structure and utilize the same quick-charging system, which implies that issues leading to a recall for one model typically have repercussions for the other.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has indicated that problems during the manufacturing process involving battery modules might result in flaws that have the potential to cause internal short circuits. Consequently, this could result in excessive heating and even fires.

Upcoming 2024 model of the Audi e-tron

In April, a more limited recall was issued for 1,042 units of E-Tron GT and RS E-Tron GT, along with 606 Taycans, due to battery issues. At present, it is not certain whether the recent recalls for Audi and Porsche vehicles are connected to the earlier ones, but the problems and solutions appear to be consistent.

In a similar fashion to Porsche's latest action on the Taycan, Audi plans to update the diagnostic software in the cars impacted by this issue at no cost to the owners. This update is slated for release in the early part of 2025. In the meantime, authorized dealers will conduct checks and, should any battery module problems be detected, they will advise car owners to limit their charging to 80% capacity. Any necessary module replacements will be carried out without any expense to the vehicle owner.

Several vehicles are equipped with internet-based data tracking systems that allow dealerships to keep an eye on any issues with the battery units. Upcoming 2024 model of the Audi e-tron

Audi intends to send out letters to vehicle owners on November 29 to notify them of the recall. For further details, owners may reach out to Audi's customer service at 1-800-253-2834. There are two distinct recall reference numbers: 931A applies to vehicles that already have online data monitoring activated, while 931B is for vehicles that do not.

Besides the recalls for battery short-circuits, the E-Tron GT/RS E-Tron GT alongside the Porsche Taycan were also recalled due to a problem with the battery seal last year. Furthermore, as the year progressed, Audi and Porsche issued a recall for the portable charging cord for these and other electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, upgrading it with an improved model that enhanced thermal protection.
