Audi A3 Sportback TFSI e (2025): Revolutionäres Upgrade für den Plug-in-Hybrid mit beeindruckender Reichweite
Audi A3 Sportback TFSI e (2025): Plug-in with Massive Range
Some all-electric vehicles would envy this mileage…
Audi has unveiled a significant revamp for the A3 and S3 earlier this year, including the introduction of the new A3 allstreet model, and now introduces the A3 Sportback TFSI e, a plug-in hybrid that's more powerful and efficient than ever. With an increased battery capacity, DC charging capabilities at fast-charging stations, and an electric range of up to 143 kilometers, the Audi A3 Sportback TFSI e receives a comprehensive technological overhaul.
The driving force behind the A3 Sportback is the combination of a new turbocharged petrol engine and an electric motor with improved power density. The previous 1.4 TFSI has been replaced by the more advanced 1.5 TFSI evo2. The new engine features enhanced cooling of the combustion chamber, and the integration of a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry and the Miller cycle, which involves closing the intake valves earlier, leads to increased compression. The compression ratio has been raised to 11.5:1 from the previous 10:1 in the 1.4 TFSI.

Electric Motor with 115 HP
Audi asserts that due to this combustion process, the new engine operates at an efficient level, which reduces both fuel consumption and emissions. The fuel injection is executed at a pressure of up to 350 bar, in contrast to the 1.4 TFSI which peaked at 200 bar. The new engine also features plasma-coated cylinder tracks that diminish internal friction. Additionally, pistons designed with integrated cooling channels enhance the combustion process.
The electric propulsion is handled by a permanently excited synchronous motor, which now delivers 85 kW and 330 Nm of torque. Similar to its predecessor, it is incorporated into the housing of the six-speed S tronic, which has been upgraded with a more durable transmission mount to accommodate the increased system power.
She channels the moments of the two engines to the front axle. The dual-clutch transmission is equipped with an electric oil pump that guarantees the shift of gears and oil supply even when the TFSI is temporarily switched off.

The gross capacity of the high-voltage battery has been increased to 25.7 kWh, which is almost double the capacity of the previous model, yet it retains a similar size. There's a usable energy content of 19.7 kWh. The battery's 96 prismatic cells are distributed across four modules and have a significantly higher energy storage capacity than before. This increase is due to improved cell chemistry and packaging, which has led to the modules having a charge capacity of 73 ampere-hours compared to the previous 37 ampere-hours.
The developers were able to increase the electric range to up to 143 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle by implementing a dedicated cooling system that maintains the battery at the ideal temperature range.
Audi presents the A3 Sportback TFSI e with two power options
The Audi A3 Sportback TFSI e is available in two versions: the 40 TFSI e and the 45 TFSI e. The more powerful variant, the 45 TFSI e, is equipped with a 1.5 TFSI evo2 engine that generates 130 kW (177 hp), which is an increase of 20 kW (27 hp) from the previous model. The peak torque is 250 Nm, available from 1,500 to 4,000 rpm.
When paired with the electric motor, the A3 Sportback 45 TFSI e delivers a combined power output of 200 kW (272 hp) and a system torque of 400 Nm. This allows for impressive driving capabilities, with the vehicle accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.3 seconds and achieving a top speed of 237 km/h.

In the smaller model, the combustion engine generates 110 kW (150 horsepower) and also produces a torque of 250 Nm. In combination with the electric motor, the new 1.5 TFSI evo2 offers a total system output of 150 kW (204 horsepower). When operating at maximum boost, the total system torque reaches 350 Nm. The A3 Sportback 40 TFSI e accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds and can reach a top speed of 225 km/h. For both models, the maximum speed on electric power alone is 140 km/h.
Always starts on electric
The drive management of the compact plug-in hybrid prioritizes high efficiency. It initiates on electric power up to -28° C. By using the EV button on the control panel or choosing the option in the MMI, the driver can give preference to the electric drive, enabling a driving experience similar to that of a fully electric vehicle.
In the "Auto Hybrid" mode, the powertrain harnesses the full system power and releases the boost power during acceleration spurts when the pedal is fully pressed down. For the A3 Sportback 40 TFSI e, this boost is 40 kW and is available for up to 15 seconds, and under ideal conditions, it can last for as long as 18 seconds.
The A3 Sportback 45 TFSI e can deliver 70 kW for up to eight seconds as the electric motor needs to produce more power to fully utilize the system's capabilities. Even in EV mode, the combustion engine will kick in during a kickdown, tapping into the boost power.
For the first time, Audi introduces fast charging with direct current at charging stations for a plug-in hybrid model. The A3 Sportback TFSI e can be charged using DC power up to 50 kW, enabling comfortable long-distance trips on electric power. This means a battery that has been depleted to 10 percent can be recharged to 80 percent in under 30 minutes.

When compared to the traditional A3 model with a conventional engine, the axle load distribution in the plug-in hybrid version is slightly more rear-biased, with 55 percent of the weight at the front and 45 percent at the rear. This is due to the lithium-ion battery located beneath the floor of the car, near the rear seats. Consequently, the suspension and shock absorbers have been specifically adjusted to accommodate this.
In Germany, the starting cost for the A3 Sportback 40 TFSI e is 44,200 Euros, while the more powerful and better-equipped 45 TFSI e begins at 47,700 Euros. Orders for both versions will be open from October 2024. Additionally, the A3 allstreet will be available as a plug-in hybrid variant in the autumn season.
