Empowering Fans: Formula E Introduces ‘FanBoost’ for Greater Viewer Involvement in Races

Published

on

By

Explanation of Formula E's 'fan boost'

The series is introducing a feature where viewers can select three drivers to receive an extra surge of speed during FIA Formula E competitions, enhancing fan engagement in the event.

Named 'FanBoost', this system allows spectators to cast a vote or multiple votes for their favorite racers in each competition. The top three drivers with the highest number of votes will gain a power boost, elevating their performance from 133kw (180bhp) to 200kw (270bhp), specifically designed to enhance their overtaking capabilities.

Designed to empower fans to have more influence over the race and support their preferred drivers, individuals can cast their votes through the official Formula E website (receiving one vote) and through the upcoming app (which allows for five votes).

The period for casting votes commences immediately after the conclusion of one race and extends all the way to the beginning of the next designated race, at which point the leading three drivers are revealed.

FanBoost represents one of many innovative features introduced in the upcoming all-electric Formula E series, set to begin on September 13th in Beijing. This series distinguishes itself with a one-day race schedule, races predominantly located in urban centers, and an extensive entertainment program aimed at enhancing the race experience.

Alex Lynn Secures First-Ever Formula E Pole Position in New York

Alex Lynn is set to lead the pack in his inaugural Formula E race, having clinched the top spot in Saturday's qualifying round in New York City, representing DS Virgin Racing.

Lynn is set to start at the front in today's inaugural FIA motorsport competition in New York, having outperformed Daniel Abt to secure the top spot during the Super Pole showdown at the Red Hook street circuit.

Lynn secured the quickest lap, clocking in at 1:03.296, outpacing Abt by two-tenths of a second, and also became the second newcomer in the series to achieve a pole position since Jean-Eric Vergne did so in Punta del Este three years earlier.

The qualifying round was a letdown for title hopeful Lucas di Grassi, who ended up in 10th place. He was aiming to take advantage of Sebastien Buemi's absence to close the 32-point lead in the standings, but failed to do so.

Sam Bird secured the fourth position for DS Virgin, followed by Jerome d'Ambrosio from Dragon in fifth, with Nick Heidfeld finishing sixth for Mahindra. NextEV NIO's duo, Nelson Piquet Jr. and Oliver Turvey, clinched the seventh and eighth positions respectively, whereas Nicolas Prost managed to grab the ninth spot for Renault e.dams. Meanwhile, Pierre Gasly, filling in for Buemi and also a Red Bull Formula 1 junior, only managed to qualify in the 19th place.

Following the E-Prix in Marrakesh on January 13th, all 10 teams participating in Formula E will extend their stay for an extra day. This extension is to accommodate a rookie test, which will involve entries of two cars per team. This test is exclusively available to drivers who have not yet obtained an e-licence.

Dragon Racing has announced that it will participate in the upcoming Formula E rookie test in Marrakesh with Super GT driver Andrea Caldarelli and Maximilian Günther, who is associated with Mercedes and competes in Formula 3.

Following the E-Prix in Marrakesh on January 13, all 10 teams competing in Formula E will extend their stay by one day to participate in a rookie test. This test allows teams to run two cars each and is exclusively available to drivers who have not yet obtained an e-licence.

The trailing Dragon squad has officially announced its team members, welcoming Caldarelli for his inaugural race in a single-seater after nearly a three-year hiatus. Throughout his driving career, the Italian racer has maintained connections with Toyota, having tested one of its Formula 1 vehicles in 2008.

At 20 years old, Günther clinched the third spot in the FIA European Formula 3 championship this year, trailing behind Lando Norris and Joel Eriksson. His racing agenda for 2018 remains undecided.

The young driver supported by Mercedes is set to experience driving a Formula E car for the first time during the rookie test in Marrakesh. This comes as the German carmaker prepares to join the championship with its own team beginning in the sixth season, which kicks off in 2019.

Published

By

Lucas di Grassi, the reigning Formula E champion, will incur a 10-position grid penalty for the upcoming Santiago E-Prix in Chile on Saturday, due to an inverter replacement in his Audi ABT Schaeffler vehicle.

Di Grassi has experienced a challenging beginning to the season, unable to earn any points in the first three races due to several reliability problems faced by the Audi team.

After the final race in Marrakesh, the Brazilian driver confessed to Crash.net that defending his title has become increasingly difficult, especially after the recent grid penalty in Santiago worsened his situation.

Reigning Formula E titleholder Lucas di Grassi faces a 10-position grid penalty at the upcoming Santiago E-Prix in Chile on Saturday due to an inverter replacement in his Audi ABT Schaeffler vehicle.

Di Grassi has faced a challenging beginning to the season, unable to secure any points in the first three races due to several reliability problems with the Audi team.

The Brazilian confessed to Crash.net after the final race in Marrakesh that he was facing a tough battle to keep his title, with the recent grid penalty in Santiago further complicating his situation.

Officials in Santiago announced that di Grassi would incur a 10-position penalty on the starting grid due to replacing the inverter in his vehicle, after previously utilizing his permitted one-time change during the previous race in Marrakesh due to a qualifying problem.

"Allan McNish, the team principal for Audi, stated that they resolved the problems they encountered in Marrakesh."

"We replicated the issue on our testing setup, but since the part is secured by the FIA, we couldn't repair it without facing a sanction."

2016 Formula 1 World Champion Nico Rosberg returned to the circuit in Berlin on Saturday, where he showcased the new 'Gen2' Formula E car during a demo drive. This car will debut in the series starting with its fifth season.

Pascal Wehrlein disqualified from leading position in Paris Formula E race, both Mahindra vehicles fail to meet tyre pressure standards

Pascal Wehrlein has lost his pole position for the Formula E event in Paris on Saturday, following a ruling that both vehicles from the Mahindra team did not maintain the necessary tyre pressure minimum.

Wehrlein managed to surpass Nissan's Oliver Rowland, securing his second Formula E pole position at the Les Invalides circuit in Paris on a Saturday afternoon. However, due to a rule violation, he will start the race from the back of the grid.

Jerome d'Ambrosio, another team member who had secured the sixth position in qualifying, will also be moved to the back of the pack due to the violation.

McLaren Contemplates Electrifying Move: Considers Entry into Formula E for the 2022-23 Gen3 Era

Published

on

By

McLaren Racing has secured an opportunity to join the FIA Formula E championship starting in the 2022-23 season, marking the beginning of the Gen3 era.

In its continuous review of possible new racing platforms, McLaren will dedicate the remainder of 2021 to contemplating participation before making a decision on whether to enter Formula E for its ninth season.

Currently, McLaren faces restrictions on participating as a team in Formula E due to McLaren Applied serving as the official supplier of batteries for the series. However, this limitation will be removed once their contract concludes at the end of the eighth season, paving the way for a possible entry into the competition.

Following the departure of Audi and BMW from Formula E after the 2021 season concludes, two openings have become available for the 2022-23 season. This upcoming season will also mark the debut of the Gen3 vehicle and the implementation of a budget limitation.

By entering into an option agreement with Formula E, McLaren secures a spot on the starting line should it choose to move forward.

"McLaren Racing's CEO, Zak Brown, mentioned that they have been carefully watching Formula E for a while now, keeping an eye on the series' development and what lies ahead."

"Having the chance to reserve a spot, coupled with the finalization of the contract between McLaren Applied and the FIA at the conclusion of Gen 2, provides us with ample time to determine whether Formula E aligns with McLaren's vision for a prospective competitive arena."

In addition to its Formula 1 activities, McLaren expanded its motorsports presence by participating in IndyCar starting in 2020 and has explored the possibility of competing in both the World Endurance Championship and IMSA.

"McLaren Racing's decision to acquire an option for participation in the Formula E grid starting with Gen3 underscores the persistent influence of our sport," Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag stated.

"We're excited to announce that McLaren Racing is considering joining Formula E, a competition that already features some of the most renowned figures in motorsport."

Valencia Debuts as Formula E Host Amid Season Calendar Revamp Due to COVID-19

Published

on

By

Valencia is set to welcome its inaugural E-Prix in April, as the Formula E world championship unveils its upcoming series of races for the 2021 season.

Due to the swift proliferation of a new COVID-19 strain, FE had to modify its season seven schedule, as the dual-event in Santiago scheduled for December was delayed.

The fully electric racing series has confirmed that its two nighttime races in Saudi Arabia will proceed as scheduled at the end of next month. The opening races of the season are set for the 26th and 27th of February.

On Thursday, Formula E unveiled the upcoming series of seven races, which includes the inaugural competitive event in Valencia and the rearranged back-to-back races in Chile.

After a pause in the racing schedule during March, the 2021 season is set to resume with the Rome E-Prix on April 10, marking Italy's comeback to the series for the first time since 2019. Subsequently, Valencia will host its inaugural E-Prix on April 24.

The Ricardo Tormo Circuit has been the venue for pre-season trials over the last three years, yet the inaugural competitive event in Spain will occur on a newly designed track layout specifically for Formula E. This marks the first occasion in the series' history that it will compete on a fixed circuit.

Despite apprehensions about the feasibility of conducting the Monaco E-Prix during the ongoing health crisis, the fourth iteration of the biennial event in the Principality has received approval to proceed on May 8. This decision revitalizes the prospect of hosting the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix later in the month.

FE is set to travel to Morocco for its fifth Marrakesh E-Prix event scheduled for May 22, followed by the seventh and eighth rounds in Santiago on June 5-6.

The Sanya and the first-ever Seoul E-Prix races have been delayed, with a conclusive verdict on both races expected to be made upon the release of the rest of the season's schedule in early spring.

"FE CEO Jamie Reigle expressed the organization's dedication to presenting a global calendar that aligns with their inaugural season as a World Championship."

We are collaborating extensively with our partners, including teams, manufacturers, sponsors, broadcasters, and host cities, to adjust to changing external conditions and guarantee the well-being and safety of all participants.

"We are committed to preserving the essence of what makes Formula E beloved by its fans: the thrill of unpredictable races, the charm of racing in iconic cities, and the seamless integration of real and digital experiences, all driven by our commitment to a brighter future."

The possibility of hosting a race in Paris has been ruled out because of prevailing health and safety concerns, leading to a shift in focus towards reintegrating a French event into the Formula E schedule for the eighth season.

FE announced that it will keep a close eye on the continuing COVID-19 pandemic and maintain steady dialogue with its network of teams, manufacturers, partners, broadcasters, and host cities.

Any changes to the calendar are contingent upon travel limitations, guidelines set by local authorities, and must receive the green light from the FIA World Motor Sport Council.

Alberto Longo, co-founder of FE, stated, "Creating the championship schedule under 'normal' conditions is a considerable endeavor that involves months of planning and preparation, working alongside a variety of cities and stakeholders."

"The upcoming series of races highlights Formula E's ability to adapt to various circumstances while still putting together an exciting and challenging schedule for both teams and drivers."

"We persist in our efforts on the final series of competitions, striving to ensure that our inaugural season as an FIA World Championship meets both our standards and the anticipations of our supporters."

Lewis frequently covers Grands Prix globally for Crash.net. Typically delivering reports directly from the location, Lewis shares the narratives of the significant figures in the sport.

Various fines for technical infractions: A summary of all Formula E penalties at the Sao Paulo E-Prix

At the Sao Paulo E-Prix 2024, Felipe Maluhy, Matthias Heinz, and Achim Loth will take on this role. They will be assisted by former race driver Pedro Couceiro. Formel E Auftakt in Sao Paulo: Weltmeister Wehrlein sichert sich dramatische Pole-Position und erste WM-Punkte

Formula E in Sao Paulo: World Champion Wehrlein Secures Thrilling Pole Position in Season's First Qualifying

By Timo Pape, December 7, 2024, 3:12 PM

Pascal Wehrlein clinched the first pole position of the new 2024/25 Formula E season in Sao Paulo! In a thrilling showdown against Oliver Rowland from Nissan, the Porsche driver turned the tables just before the end, securing not only the top starting spot but also the first three World Championship points. Jake Dennis from Andretti and Max Günther from DS Penske earned spots in the second row. Meanwhile, Jaguar's Mitch Evans faced a significant setback.

Group A: Fresh Energy in the Group Stage – Dennis Takes the Lead

Typically, qualifying groups are organized based on the current championship standings. However, at the start of the season, the eleven teams have the liberty to choose which of their drivers will compete in each group. This results in every team being represented once in each group. Among the frontrunners in Group A were Oliver Rowland and Jake Dennis, but several other fast drivers were also on the track. In the initial minutes, Sam Bird topped the leaderboard, with Lucas di Grassi, Antonio Felix da Costa, and David Beckmann trailing behind.

However, unlike in previous years, not all drivers made pit stops to change tires, leading to a different dynamic on the track. Instead of setting the fastest laps at six and twelve minutes, times were consistently beaten, with Jake Dennis among those improving his performance. After completing a quick lap, Dennis communicated over the radio, saying, "The tires are done." This was due to the new, softer Hankook tires having a significantly narrower temperature range for optimal performance. Despite setting his fastest time relatively early, Dennis was exceptionally quick.

The Briton maintained his lead even after time ran out. Alongside him, Felix da Costa, Rowland, and Jean-Eric Vergne secured their spots in the duel phase. However, disappointment struck the reigning champion team, Jaguar, as Nick Cassidy finished in fifth place. Following him were Sebastien Buemi, di Grassi, last year's winner Bird, Jake Hughes, Beckmann, and Nyck de Vries.

Group B: Wehrlein Matches Dennis, Setback for Evans

In Group B, reigning world champion Pascal Wehrlein and his competitor Mitch Evans took to the track. The "Kiwi," who had claimed victory at the Sao Paulo E-Prix two years prior, found himself halted on the circuit just three and a half minutes in—similar to what happened during the second practice session. It was suspected that his emergency brake might have been triggered, but even his team principal, James Barclay, was uncertain. The race officials paused the session with red flags.

During the team radio communication, his race engineer instructed Evans to perform a "power cycle" to restart his vehicle. Although he managed to get moving again briefly, he soon experienced repeated stops due to a "Brake System Error 535." The Jaguar crept back to the pit at a snail's pace, marking a disastrous season opener for the team. After a pause of just over ten minutes, the session resumed with only seven minutes remaining.

The first impressive time was set by Wehrlein, comparable to the pace of Group A winner Dennis. Edo Mortara moved up to second place with a strong lap. Stoffel Vandoorne followed in third, while Dan Ticktum and Norman Nato were competing for fourth place. After time ran out, Max Günther unexpectedly improved to third place, where he stayed. Wehrlein topped his group ahead of Mortara. Nato also advanced to the duels in fourth place. The remaining positions were occupied by Vandoorne, Ticktum, Robin Frijns, Nico Müller, Taylor Barnard, Zane Maloney, and the unlucky Evans.

Overview: The Sao Paulo Formula E Qualifying Quarterfinals

Quarterfinal 1: Oliver Rowland vs. Antonio Felix da Costa

The first quarterfinal was anticipated to be a closely contested battle. Rowland had a strong start, initially clocking in almost two-tenths of a second faster than Felix da Costa. However, in the second sector, Felix da Costa began to close the gap. During this time, Rowland reported steering issues over the radio. Despite having to concede the third sector to Felix da Costa, Rowland managed to secure a place in the semifinals by a narrow margin of six hundredths of a second!

VF2: Jean-Eric Vergne versus Jake Dennis

In the second matchup, Dennis secured a solid victory. The British driver from Andretti outpaced the experienced Vergne in all three sectors, ultimately finishing more than half a second ahead. With this performance, the 2023 World Champion confidently advanced to the semifinals.

VF3: Max Günther vs. Edo Mortara

In the third quarter-final, Günther had a slightly stronger start. During the second part of the track, he was three-tenths of a second faster than Mortara, who had previously impressed during the group stage. Despite both competitors being evenly matched in Sector 3, Günther ultimately secured a clear victory with a lead of over three-tenths of a second.

VF4: Norman Nato vs. Pascal Wehrlein

In the final quarterfinal match-up, Norman Nato started strongly by clocking a faster sector time than Pascal Wehrlein. However, Wehrlein, the reigning world champion from Germany, dominated the second segment. In the final stretch, both racers were nearly evenly matched. Crossing the finish line, Wehrlein outpaced Nato by 1.22 seconds, securing the last spot in the semifinals. Fans could now look forward to an all-British and an all-German showdown in the next round.

Semifinal Matchup

SF1: Oliver Rowland vs. Jake Dennis

In this showdown between the qualifying titans, a first in the Gen3 era, the favorite contenders for pole position faced off. Rowland kicked off with a noticeably superior first sector during the fast laps. However, Dennis claimed the second sector, setting up an exciting contest as anticipated. Despite Dennis closing the gap in Sector 3, it wasn't enough; he ended up a mere thousandth of a second slower than Rowland, resulting in his defeat. Rowland advances to the final!

Max Günther vs. Pascal Wehrlein: The Duel

Back in March, Max Günther and Pascal Wehrlein faced off during the qualifying rounds in São Paulo, where Wehrlein came out on top. This time around, the Porsche driver once again excelled, taking the lead in the first sector. Wehrlein extended his advantage over Günther by another tenth of a second in the second part of the track, ultimately increasing his lead by two more tenths. As a result, Wehrlein advanced confidently to the final against Rowland with nearly a half-second lead. Günther will begin the race from the second row in fourth position.

Final Showdown: Oliver Rowland vs. Pascal Wehrlein

These two had faced off once before, in the quarterfinals of the Misano E-Prix, where Wehrlein emerged victorious. However, this time, Rowland had a better start, gaining an early lead of almost two-tenths of a second over Wehrlein. In the second sector, the German driver made a comeback, leveling the playing field. In a dramatic turn of events, Wehrlein managed to overtake Rowland in the final stretch, winning by a mere 99 milliseconds! This victory secured him the pole position and the first three championship points for the reigning world champion. It marks the seventh pole position in Formula E for the 30-year-old.
