The procedure for choosing
A group of film experts from various EU countries selects the five films nominated for the LUX Audience Award.
The nominated movies will be shown in theaters throughout the European Union up until April 25. Both the public and Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) will evaluate these films. The opinions of MEPs and the audience ratings will each have an equal influence in determining the ultimate recipient of the 2025 LUX Audience Award.
Context
Over 700 showings of the nominated movies were held across EU nations for the 2024 Award, featuring discussions with over 70,000 attendees. In 2025, the Award will be enhanced by the Young Talent Programme, aimed at involving young film industry professionals in advocating for European values and supporting the LUX Audience Award initiative.
Beginning in 2020, both EU residents and Members of the European Parliament have collaboratively selected the recipient of the LUX Audience Award. This honor is given each year by the European Parliament and the European Film Academy, with support from the European Commission and the Europa Cinemas network.
The LUX Audience Award aims to encourage discussion and interaction between political figures and the general public using film as a platform. The films nominated for this award tackle key European principles and highlight significant contemporary social and political issues, including mental health, poverty, climate change, freedom of speech, gender equality, and LGBTIQ+ rights. Throughout the competition, the European Parliament offers subtitles in all 24 official EU languages and arranges complimentary screenings of the five nominated films in all 27 EU Member States. Additionally, the winning film will receive subtitles tailored for audiences with hearing impairments.
