Yamaha’s Austrian MotoGP Nightmare: Quartararo and Team Endure Disastrous Weekend
Fabio Quartararo and Yamaha label their performance in the Austrian MotoGP as "catastrophic" and a "day to be erased from memory."
Yamaha finished in 16th and 18th place during the Austrian MotoGP, following a lengthy lap penalty for Fabio Quartararo.
Yamaha faced yet another challenging round at the Austrian MotoGP, with both of its riders ending the race without scoring any points.
Fabio Quartararo showed strong competitiveness for Yamaha during the second free practice, securing a fifth-place finish. Notably, his performance on worn tires was commendable.
Despite having new tyres, Yamaha couldn't take advantage of the extra traction, leading to both Quartararo and Alex Rins facing difficulties during qualifying and at the start of both races.
Quartararo's Grand Prix experience worsened due to a lengthy lap penalty, yet his overall dissatisfaction stemmed from Yamaha's performance over the weekend in Austria.
"He admitted that the weekend had been quite disappointing for them. Their expectations were higher, particularly for today's race. They ended up too distant from the leading participants, indicating a need for significant effort to ensure improvements moving forward."
Throughout the weekend, Alex Rins faced challenges with the rear of his bike lifting, ultimately finishing the race in 16th place.
"Rins described the race as incredibly challenging," he commented. "Crossing the finish line was quite difficult, primarily due to the hot weather and also because I had some issues handling the motorcycle."
"Compared to the previous day, there was a slight enhancement in the configuration, which helped, but maintaining the rear tyre's contact with the road surface remained challenging. When the back end rises, we have to compensate by utilizing the front brakes, leading to occasional locking issues."
Rins found a silver lining, finishing his first race since his crash at the Dutch TT. "However, I feel really good about my efforts," he remarked. "I've shown that I can push through tough times with dedication and steady effort. Therefore, I'm eager for the upcoming private trial in Misano. I'm prepared to put in the effort."
For Maio Meregalli, the team manager of Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP, optimism was in shorter supply.
"He described the race day as one to erase from memory," he commented. "It closely resembled the outcome of yesterday's Sprint race. The weekend proved more challenging than anticipated. Despite his physical state, Álex performed admirably under today's sweltering conditions."
"Fabio kicked off strong but couldn't maintain his stance, and the imposition of a long-lap penalty dashed his hopes of contending for points. Beyond that, there isn't much to add."
"It's crucial for us to pinpoint the reasons behind our lackluster results. Before the upcoming Aragon Grand Prix in a fortnight, we're scheduled for an exclusive test at Misano the following week."
"We plan to assess various elements and, should the outcomes be positive, our goal is to directly transport those components to Aragon."
