Yamaha and Honda Gear Up for Intensive Misano MotoGP Marathon: Testing, Racing, and a Quest for Perfection
Yamaha and Honda gear up for exclusive Misano tests alongside three sanctioned MotoGP races at the renowned Italian circuit.
This year, the establishment of an additional MotoGP race at Misano, along with an official test occurring in the interim, will see the top-tier riders compete at the Italian circuit three times by the end of September.
However, Yamaha and Honda riders will be allowed to participate in four private testing sessions, as granted by the concessions package.
"Following the Austria race this weekend, we're heading directly to Misano," confirmed Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo. "We're scheduled for two days of testing."
Joan Mir of Repsol Honda commented, "Our schedule includes a Misano test, followed by a Misano race, then another Misano test, and yet another Misano race! This should be fascinating."
The MotoGP event in San Marino is scheduled to take place at the Misano circuit from September 6th to 8th, with a formal MotoGP testing session set for the subsequent Monday, September 9th.
The 'Emilia Romagna' event has been scheduled for September 20-22, stepping in for Kazakhstan, which was initially set to take over for India.
"Following the second race in Misano, Quartararo humorously claimed he could navigate the circuit blindfolded!"
"However, I believe it will be fascinating to see how this updated engine performs across various locations."
Quartararo has identified maneuverability as the primary aspect that needs enhancement in the M1.
"At Silverstone, he pointed out that what used to be our advantage in bike control has now become our disadvantage. He emphasized the need for improvement in this aspect."
"Currently, our engine's speed has improved, yet we're facing difficulties in maneuvering and halting. There are several aspects where we're experiencing challenges."
Yamaha aims to find the optimal equilibrium between sufficient engine power and the capability to handle curves effectively.
"Every time you search for something specific, you're giving up something else in the process," Quartararo remarked.
"Without a doubt, we'll have to give up something to improve our control."
At the same time, Mir, who anticipates updates from Honda, such as an updated engine setup, at the Austrian race this weekend, believes that while Misano may not be the perfect location for testing, it's suitable to assess the performance of the new components.
"Misano has its own unique characteristics. It features a high level of grip and is known for its stop-and-go turns," Mir commented.
To effectively test things, a circuit like Sepang is required, which features extended curves and substantial spinning.
"We can still attempt everything, but [Misano] might not be the ideal [test] track."
The series of races held outside Europe kicks off the weekend following the Emilia Romagna event with the Indonesian Grand Prix taking place in Mandalika.
