Yamaha Aims for Aragon Comeback with New Asphalt and Upgrades After Austria Setback
Yamaha sets its sights on improved performance with Aragon's new track surface and updated components, aiming to bounce back from their most challenging weekend this season in Austria.
Yamaha's Monster team experienced its most challenging weekend of the 2024 MotoGP season in Austria, as neither Fabio Quartararo nor Alex Rins were able to secure any points in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events.
For the first time this year, Yamaha failed to score any points, and Honda outperformed them for just the second occasion this season.
Yamaha is optimistic that the enhanced traction from Aragon's newly repaved surface, combined with fresh components from their recent private test in Misano, will boost their performance in Alcaniz this coming weekend.
Yamaha secured first and third places at the circuit, with the then Petronas team members Franco Morbidelli and Quartararo, in 2020.
However, the rider from France finished in eighth place at Aragon during his championship-winning season in 2021 and then was involved in a collision with Marc Marquez on the first lap of the latest 2022 race, leading to a crash.
The competition concluded with no Yamaha competitors finishing among the first 13.
"Massimo Meregalli, the team director, acknowledged that while Aragon has an appealing track and design, it has posed significant challenges for them in the past few years."
"The circuit has undergone a full resurfacing since our previous visit. We're optimistic that this fresh asphalt will offer better traction and enhance our overall performance."
"Furthermore, this weekend, we will introduce fresh products that have been tried and confirmed by the riders during our exclusive Misano trial last week."
"We aim to optimize our performance in this Grand Prix, striving for the highest possible outcomes while also gathering valuable information."
"Should anyone have any grip available for purchase, please inform me!"
Quartararo, who achieved his highest finish at the Aragon MotoGP with fifth place during his debut season in 2019, described the recent updates to the M1 as a 'minor enhancement'.
During our time at the exclusive Misano trials, we experimented with various innovations. From these tests, we observed that the new components offer us a slight enhancement," remarked the racer with the number 20, who later humorously posted on social media following the Misano trials: 'In case anyone [has] extra grip to spare, hit me up!'
"This upcoming weekend presents another opportunity to test these elements, this time during a race weekend scenario. Aragon typically poses challenges for me, however, I'm intrigued to find out whether the new pavement will offer any advantage," he further stated.
Spanish sensation Rins, known for his victories in Aragon across both the Moto3 and MotoGP categories, will be navigating the circuit this time as a part of the Yamaha team, marking his debut on the track under their banner.
"Even though there was a bit of rain, we capitalized on our exclusive testing session at Misano. I was impressed with a few of the updates, so we've taken them with us to Aragon, and we're heading into this Grand Prix feeling optimistic," he commented.
"I have a fondness for the Aragon circuit – it's a venue where I've historically performed well. With the recent resurfacing of the track, I'm optimistic that the enhanced grip will work in our favor."
