Wolff Hits Back at Horner Over Russell Remarks: A Tense Rivalry Intensifies Amid Singapore GP Speculations
Toto Wolff counters Christian Horner's recent remarks by alleging Horner is causing trouble following a reference to George Russell. Wolff hits back at suggestions from Horner that George Russell might be considered for a position at Red Bull.
Toto Wolff has charged his main competitor, Christian Horner, with causing trouble after the Red Bull leader suggested George Russell might be a potential choice.
During the Singapore Grand Prix weekend, speculation about Daniel Ricciardo's future has sparked widespread discussion about Red Bull's racing team composition.
In a discussion with Sky on Saturday, Horner pointed out that Russell's contract expires at the end of 2025, stating it would be "unwise" to overlook this fact.
Horner stated, "Honestly, stepping beyond our usual boundaries doesn't scare us. George Russell's contract concludes after next year. Ignoring that fact would be unwise.
"Additionally, there are skilled drivers who will also be reaching the end of their contracts."
The remarks made by Horner gain added significance in light of Mercedes' attention towards Max Verstappen.
Next year's driver lineup for Mercedes will consist of Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
Nonetheless, should Verstappen become available, Wolff could face a challenging choice.
Following Sunday's race, Wolff responded to queries regarding Horner's remarks.
Wolff, as cited by Motorsport.com, remarked, "I believe he's constantly causing trouble; it's all part of the strategy."
"George has always been behind the wheel of a Mercedes, and if all goes as planned, he will continue to be. We're tied to him through an extensive agreement."
Wolff maintains that Russell and Antonelli represent Mercedes' upcoming generation, despite earlier considerations of Verstappen.
He further stated, "These individuals represent the future. They have been associated with Mercedes and will continue to be so. As a result, we've secured long-term agreements with George and Kimi, which include complex terms regarding options, among other things."
"Mercedes has consistently been a high-stress environment, yet this is the position we find ourselves in as a team currently, opting to proceed with these two individuals."
Verstappen is tied to his current contract until the conclusion of 2028, yet it's commonly known that there are several termination clauses included in his agreement.
