Verstappen’s Remarkable Recovery to Dominate Austrian GP Practice Despite Early Setback
Max Verstappen bounces back from FP1 hiccup to lead the single practice round at the F1 Austrian Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen bounced back from a momentary halt on the circuit to lead in the sole practice round at the F1 Austrian Grand Prix.
The current world champion faced difficulties when his Red Bull vehicle stalled at the base of the incline leading to Turn 1. However, he managed to coast his RB20 back to the track officials, who then assisted by pushing him into the pitlane while the race was temporarily halted under a red flag.
The problem turned out to be trivial, allowing Red Bull to quickly get him back on track with minimal delay.
Verstappen secured the quickest lap time during the session, clocking in at 1 minute and 5.685 seconds on soft tyres, putting him 0.276 seconds ahead of McLaren's Oscar Piastri.
Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, driving for Ferrari, finished in third and fourth places respectively, trailing Verstappen by almost four-tenths of a second.
Throughout the majority of the first practice session, Lewis Hamilton dominated the standings, with the seven-time world champion finishing just 0.5 seconds behind the leader after achieving his fastest lap on hard tyres.
Esteban Ocon secured the sixth spot for Alpine, followed by Lance Stroll from Aston Martin and George Russell of Mercedes, who, similar to his teammate Hamilton, recorded his quickest lap on hard tires.
Yuki Tsunoda and Fernando Alonso secured positions within the top 10 for Red Bull and Aston Martin, respectively.
Sergio Perez was only able to achieve the 12th fastest time even though he was on soft tyres, whereas Lando Norris was on track for a promising lap until he went off track slightly, his tire catching the gravel at the exit of Turn 4.
The sprint qualifying session at the Red Bull Ring is scheduled for 4:30 PM local time.
