Verstappen to Discuss Norris Clash, Disputes Need for Apology After Austrian GP Incident
Will Max Verstappen Offer an Apology for the Incident with Lando Norris? "We're Going to Discuss It"
"Definitely, we're going to discuss it. It's regrettable that this occurred."
Max Verstappen has stated that he plans to examine the collision with Lando Norris more closely before deciding whether to offer an apology to the McLaren F1 driver, in response to a question about their altercation at the Austrian Grand Prix.
During Lap 64, as they were nearing Turn 3, Verstappen and Norris made contact.
Verstappen seemed to drift slightly to the left into Norris' trajectory as they approached the braking area.
The collision caused both vehicles to sustain punctures, forcing them to slowly return to the pit lane.
Norris had to end his career prematurely because he suffered major injuries, while Verstappen secured a fifth-place finish.
In a conversation with Sky Sports following the event, Verstappen was questioned about potentially offering an apology to Norris.
He responded, saying, "I have to reflect on the circumstances and reasons behind our contact. We will definitely discuss this. It's regrettable that this occurred."
Verstappen has also rejected the notion that he is facing greater pressure than before.
"I've faced numerous challenges throughout my professional journey," he further stated.
Verstappen received a 10-second penalty for his involvement in the incident.
Nevertheless, Verstappen appeared to contest the decision and the idea that he changed direction while braking.
He admitted, "It's difficult for those observing from the outside to notice when I apply the brakes. I'm aware that this has been a recurring issue," he shared. "My approach involves adjusting my steering wheel first, followed by braking while moving straight ahead."
From an outsider's perspective, it may seem simplistic to comment on my maneuvering during braking. However, I believe that the person behind the wheel is most knowledgeable about their actions. While everyone is entitled to their viewpoint, ultimately, it's me at the controls. I have the greatest command over the situation.
"Criticizing and making remarks is simple. However, it doesn't really matter."
The tension between the two had been escalating until it reached a critical moment on Lap 64.
Norris had made several daring maneuvers into Turn 3, at times even forcing Verstappen out of the race track boundaries.
When asked about the fairness of the battle, Verstappen commented, “At times, his aggressive braking maneuvers meant he would overshoot, and I had to steer clear to avoid a collision.”
"The geometry of the corner seems to contribute to these problems as well. It's always unfortunate when paths intersect in such a manner."
Verstappen experienced a smooth ride in the initial stages of the race, maintaining a lead of more than six seconds ahead of Norris.
Nonetheless, a delayed pit stop coupled with a tire lock at Turn 4 placed him at a disadvantage.
Consequently, Verstappen expressed dissatisfaction with the team due to numerous mistakes they made.
He summed it up by saying, "We made numerous mistakes, ranging from our approach to some truly terrible pit stops. Ultimately, we ended up in this situation because of our own actions. That's the most frustrating part; we brought this upon ourselves."
"The initial phase wasn't terrible, but it progressively deteriorated. We must examine the vehicle…"
