Verstappen Firmly Closes Door on Mercedes Move, Commits Future to Red Bull Amid Wolff’s Interest
Max Verstappen dismisses recent advances from Toto Wolff regarding a potential move to Mercedes in 2025.
Max Verstappen has emphasized his commitment to staying with Red Bull until the 2025 Formula 1 season, despite persistent expressions of interest from Mercedes leader Toto Wolff.
Following the Spanish Grand Prix, Wolff was questioned on the potential of bringing Verstappen on board to succeed Lewis Hamilton in 2025.
All indicators suggest that Mercedes is leaning towards selecting Andrea Kimi Antonelli, yet Wolff is taking his time before finalizing any choices.
Speaking in Barcelona, he stated, "No, a decision regarding the driver has not yet been reached."
"I expressed our desire to maintain this decision for an extended period, given the uncertainty of future events."
Horner made his stance clear in response to Wolff, emphasizing that Verstappen's future is secure: "I have no doubts about Max's plans for next year. He's staying put. But is Toto still bringing him up?"
Ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix taking place this weekend, Verstappen responded to inquiries regarding Horner and Wolff's remarks, specifically addressing whether he would definitively dismiss the possibility of moving to Mercedes.
He stated, "I believe I've mentioned this previously. Obviously, there's a lot of conversation happening. What's crucial is ensuring we possess a highly competitive vehicle moving forward. Currently, the competition is close, but as a team, we're collaborating effectively to enhance our performance further."
"I've already communicated this to the team: our efforts and concentration are on the coming year, with the aim to regain our competitive edge."
Red Bull's supremacy has diminished compared to the previous season, with McLaren seemingly boasting the fastest pace in the latest races.
Nonetheless, even though Red Bull's lead was diminishing, Verstappen dismissed the idea of making an immediate change solely for that purpose.
"I believe that's not the way Formula 1 operates, where you can just decide to leave abruptly. That's not the procedure," he further stated. "I'm under an extensive contract with the team. I'm quite content with my current position."
"As I've mentioned previously, our attention is already on the upcoming year, considering enhancements we can make to the vehicle. That should give a clear indication of my plans regarding which team I'll be driving for next year."
