Austrian Grand Prix F1 Driver Assessments: Max Verstappen Receives His Worst Rating of the Season
Following an eventful 2024 Austrian Grand Prix, Crash.net has released its evaluations of F1 drivers.
George Russell – 9
George Russell secured Mercedes' inaugural victory since 2022, taking advantage of a fortunate situation. Leading up to that moment, he had an impressive performance throughout the weekend, ready to seize the moment when it presented itself.
Oscar Piastri – 7.5
Piastri might feel let down for not capitalizing on the crash between Verstappen and Norris. However, he managed a strong comeback from starting seventh to securing a second-place finish. His speed in the final stages of the race was impressive.
Carlos Sainz – 8.5
Considering Ferrari's position as having the fourth quickest vehicle on the Austrian circuit, Sainz excelled throughout the event, securing a substantial amount of points.
Lewis Hamilton – 7
The Red Bull Ring in Austria remains a challenging circuit for Hamilton, as demonstrated once again during the latest race.
Max Verstappen – 6.5
Verstappen showcased exceptional skill in Austria, but his involvement in a collision with Norris led to him receiving a 10-second penalty.
Nico Hulkenberg – 9.5
An incredible performance by Hulkenberg throughout the weekend. He reached Q3 and turned it into the best finish of the year for Haas.
Sergio Perez – 5.5
Perez's disappointing performance in the European races persisted in Austria, where he significantly trailed behind his teammate. Although damage to his sidepod affected his race day prospects, he failed to pose any challenge to the frontrunner teams in Austria.
Kevin Magnussen – 8
Similar to Hulkenberg, Magnussen stood out in Austria, with his performance in the sprint race being particularly noteworthy.
Daniel Ricciardo – 8
Ricciardo had a solid performance throughout the weekend, significantly outpacing his teammate Tsunoda and securing a spot in the top 10.
Pierre Gasly – 7.5
Despite seeming to trail behind Ocon in terms of single-lap speed, Gasly proved superior when it mattered most on the race track. Their competition was intense, yet Gasly emerged victorious.
Charles Leclerc – Rating: 6
Leclerc experienced a dreadful weekend. He encountered an anti-stall problem during the sprint, which initially set him back, and then suffered damage in the first lap, which completely derailed his race.
Esteban Ocon – 7
Ocon appeared to have an advantage over Gasly initially, however, in the race that took place on Sunday, it was Gasly who emerged victorious.
Lance Stroll – Rating: 6
In Austria, Aston Martin lacked speed, leading to Stroll's elimination in the first qualifying round. He was not a contender for a position in the top 10.
Yuki Tsunoda – 6
Tsunoda had a disappointing weekend, facing a penalty for making negative remarks about his team over the radio.
Alex Albon – 6.5
Williams experienced a lack of speed in Austria, with Albon falling behind his teammate Sargeant during the sprint qualifying. However, the usual hierarchy was reinstated during the main race.
Valtteri Bottas – 6.5
Despite Sauber's position as the least fast team in Formula 1, Bottas consistently outperformed Zhou, showcasing a clear edge.
Zhou Guanyu – 6
Zhou had a challenging time keeping up with Bottas in Austria.
Fernando Alonso's rough streak in 2024 persisted as he encountered yet another challenging weekend. He was given a 10-second time penalty.
Logan Sargeant scored 5.5
Sargeant managed to outperform Albon during the sprint qualifying, marking the peak of his weekend.
Lando Norris – 8
Evaluating Norris' performance in Austria proves challenging due to his early exit from the race after colliding with Verstappen. He regretted his lack of experience during the sprint and aimed to compensate in the main event. Despite his assertive approach, it ultimately didn't pan out. Nonetheless, this experience presents valuable learning opportunities for Norris.
