Trackhouse Racing’s Unexpected Moto2 Coup: Ai Ogura Set to Join for 2025 MotoGP Season, Sidestepping Joe Roberts and Jack Miller
Trackhouse Racing is reportedly on the verge of securing a surprising addition from Moto2 for their 2025 MotoGP team, a move that has caught many off guard.
Trackhouse Racing plans to finalize their 2025 MotoGP team by signing a newcomer from Moto2.
According to Motorsport.com, contrary to expectations, Joe Roberts will not be joining the team. Instead, Ai Ogura is poised to secure the position as Raul Fernandez's teammate, following Fernandez's contract renewal on Tuesday.
Although the agreement has not been officially finalized, it is reported that Ogura has verbally committed to joining the team from the United States.
Roberts, similar to Ogura in competing for the Moto2 championship, was anticipated to be the top newcomer pick if Trackhouse had decided to participate in Moto2.
Despite multiple discussions with the rider from California, Trackhouse seems poised to pass up the opportunity to place an American on their vehicle.
Jack Miller, another competitor, might be exiting MotoGP unless he manages to clinch a spot with Pramac Yamaha.
The most unexpected aspect of Ogura's move to Trackhouse is that he was considered a key player in Honda's future strategies.
Ogura was widely regarded as the heir apparent to Takaaki Nakagami at LCR. However, with Trackhouse poised to clinch a deal with Ogura, it is now anticipated that Nakagami will remain in his current position.
Honda considered putting Ogura on their motorcycle in both 2023 and 2024, yet the promising Japanese competitor declined the offer, citing the bike's insufficient competitive edge and his ambition to advance to Moto2 as the champion.
Ogura is set to become the third newcomer to Aprilia, following the signings of Jorge Martin and Marco Bezzecchi to the official Aprilia Racing squad.
