Track Limits Warning Derails Jorge Martin’s Victory Hopes in Misano MotoGP Sprint
Jorge Martin cites a caution regarding track boundaries as the reason for a detrimental mistake in the Misano MotoGP sprint.
The frontrunner in the championship attributes a warning about exceeding track limits to his loss in the Misano
Pramac MotoGP competitor Jorge Martin attributes his failure to secure a sprint win at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix to a lapse in focus, triggered by a warning about exceeding track boundaries.
Martin surged past Francesco Bagnaia, who was in pole position, moving from second place on the grid to take the lead at the beginning of the 13-lap sprint race at Misano on Saturday.
The Pramac competitor withstood significant pressure from the two-time world champion during the initial seven laps, echoing the San Marino sprint that took place a fortnight earlier.
On the eighth lap, at Turn 13, Martin veered off track, giving Bagnaia the opportunity to move into the lead.
Despite closely following the factory Ducati rider, Martin couldn't prevent Bagnaia from securing a vital win.
Martin later attributed the error to a lapse in focus after receiving a warning for exceeding track limits when he veered off the circuit on the seventh lap.
"Absolutely, maintaining my focus became challenging after receiving the track limits warning," Martin expressed in parc ferme following the sprint.
"I made a minor error that became the crucial factor in my defeat in the race."
"I believe being ahead would have given me additional chances to secure a victory."
"Pecco was simply unbeatable today. I believe that I might have a slight edge for tomorrow. We'll figure out a strategy to return to winning form."
He stated: "I'm content with the day's outcome. I definitely missed out on winning, of which I'm completely certain."
"I believe I got off to a good beginning; from there, I concentrated intently on my rhythm and how I felt."
"Subsequently, I was hit with a track limits alert at an inopportune spot, which slightly disrupted my focus. This caused me to deviate from the intended path, allowing Pecco to overtake me. Undoubtedly, it was a minor error, but it cost me dearly by costing me the win."
Martin has already faced penalties for exceeding track boundaries this season, specifically while he was in the lead during the sprint race at the Austrian Grand Prix.
During the competition, Martin took a shortcut through the Turn 2 chicane, causing him to forfeit his leading position to Bagnaia. Subsequently, he was penalized with a long lap for failing to slow down by the mandatory second due to his track shortcut.
During the Emilia Romagna sprint race, 14 competitors received cautions for going beyond the boundaries of the track, whereas Raul Fernandez and Joan Mir faced penalties requiring them to take longer laps due to their consistent deviation from the course.
Victor Bagnaia stayed within the confines of the track throughout the 13-lap race.
Martin's setback in the Emilia Romagna sprint resulted in his championship advantage being reduced from seven points to a mere four before the grand prix on Sunday.
Should Bagnaia emerge victorious in the grand prix, he will ascend to the top of the leaderboards as the series moves on to the upcoming Indonesian GP next week.
Ducati stands a chance to secure its 100th Grand Prix victory on Sunday, and also has the opportunity to clinch the constructors' championship with five races still remaining.
