Track Limits Warning Derails Jorge Martin’s Sprint Victory at Misano, Tightens Championship Battle
Jorge Martin claims that a warning about track limits caused him to make an expensive mistake during the Misano MotoGP sprint. The championship leader attributes the error in the Misano sprint to receiving a track limits warning.
Pramac MotoGP racer Jorge Martin admitted that his focus waned after receiving a track limits warning, causing the mistake that cost him the sprint win at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
Martin surged past pole position holder Francesco Bagnaia from his starting position in second place, seizing the lead as the 13-lap sprint race commenced on Saturday at Misano.
The Pramac racer dealt with significant pressure from the two-time world champion during the initial seven laps, mirroring the San Marino sprint race that took place a fortnight earlier.
On the eighth lap at Turn 13, Martin went wide, giving Bagnaia the chance to move into the lead.
Although Martin closely trailed the factory Ducati rider, he couldn't prevent Bagnaia from securing an important win.
Martin attributed the error to losing focus after receiving a warning for exceeding track limits and going off the circuit on the seventh lap.
"Absolutely, I couldn't maintain my focus after receiving the track limits warning," Martin remarked in parc ferme following the sprint.
"I made a minor error that ultimately cost me the race."
"I believe that if I had maintained the lead, my chances of winning would have been higher."
"However, Pecco seemed unbeatable today. I believe I might be a bit stronger tomorrow. We'll figure out how to return to winning form."
He expressed his satisfaction with how the day unfolded, though he acknowledged that he definitely missed out on winning.
"However, I believe I began well and from there, I concentrated intensely on maintaining my speed and staying in tune with how I felt."
"I got a track limits warning at a tricky spot, which caused me to lose focus and miss the racing line, allowing Pecco to overtake me. It was a minor error, but it cost me the win significantly."
Martin has already had issues with track limits regulations this season, notably while leading the sprint race at the Austrian Grand Prix.
During the race, Martin crossed the Turn 2 chicane, resulting in him losing his lead to Bagnaia. Subsequently, he received a long lap penalty for not losing the mandatory second when taking the shortcut on the track.
During the Emilia Romagna sprint, 14 cyclists received cautions for going beyond track boundaries, while Raul Fernandez and Joan Mir faced long lap penalties due to frequent off-track excursions.
Bagnaia, the victor of the race, stayed within the track boundaries throughout the 13-lap sprint.
Martin's loss in the Emilia Romagna sprint race has reduced his championship advantage from seven points to merely four as he approaches Sunday's grand prix.
Should Bagnaia secure a victory in the grand prix, he will move to the top of the standings before next week's Indonesian GP.
Ducati could secure its 100th Grand Prix victory on Sunday and clinch the constructors' championship with five races remaining.
