Toyota Contemplates the End of Pure Gas Cars in U.S. as Electrified Models Take the Wheel
Toyota is deliberating on a timeline for phasing out the sale of solely gasoline-powered vehicles in the United States. The company anticipates that the demand for hybrids, plug-in hybrids, electric vehicles, and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles will soon surpass that of conventional combustion-engine cars, prompting consideration to discontinue their sale altogether.
Toyota's chief scientist, Gill Pratt, disclosed in a Bloomberg interview that discussions are underway in the United States about ceasing production of solely internal combustion engines for the American market. He noted that the mere consideration of such a move suggests it could be imminent. "I am not involved in the decision-making process, but the fact that it's on the table indicates we're nearing that point," said Pratt.
2025 Model of Toyota's Land
Nearly half of Toyota's sales in the U.S. for the month of September were made up of their electric lineup, which encompasses hybrid, plug-in hybrid, fuel cell, and fully electric vehicles, as reported by Bloomberg. This 48% share reflects a significant increase from the 20% recorded during the same month two years prior.
Hybrids are taking on a significant workload. Toyota's lineup in the United States features a hybrid option for almost all its models. Furthermore, a number of vehicles, such as the Camry, Sequoia, Sienna, and the renowned Land Cruiser, come exclusively with hybrid systems.
2024 Model of Toyota bZ4X
Toyota persists in providing plug-in hybrid options for the Prius and RAV4 models, dropping the 'Prime' designation for better customer clarity. The company markets the hydrogen-powered Mirai sedan exclusively in California; however, due to insufficient fueling infrastructure, even in this state with the most developed hydrogen station network, the practicality of owning a hydrogen vehicle is limited.
Toyota currently offers just two electric vehicles in the American market, the bZ4X and its cousin, the Lexus RZ. However, the company is set to expand its EV lineup with the introduction of a new electric SUV featuring three rows of seats, which will roll out of its Kentucky manufacturing facility in 2026. This SUV will be powered by batteries produced in Toyota's upcoming factory in North Carolina. On the international front, Toyota has declared its intention to ramp up electric vehicle production by ten times within the next four years. Additionally, the company has also confirmed that it is progressing with the small-scale production of innovative solid-state batteries, which could revolutionize the industry.
