Toyota and Subaru Amp Up EV Collaboration with Second Electric SUV Set for 2026 Launch
According to Nikkei, Toyota and Subaru are teaming up once again to introduce a new electric SUV by 2026.
According to recent information, a new vehicle is set to join the ranks of the Subaru Solterra and Toyota bZ4X duo. This upcoming model is expected to hit markets in the United States, Europe, and Japan. Production is reportedly earmarked for Subaru's Yajima facility in the Gunma prefecture of Japan, with projections indicating a monthly production volume of approximately 15,000 to 20,000 units.

According to information from a May report by Automotive News, Subaru is expected to collaborate with Toyota on the development of three additional electric SUV models by 2026. It is speculated that one of these electric vehicles will be a Subaru-branded variant of Toyota's upcoming three-row electric SUV, which was initially slated for production in Kentucky in 2025 but is now anticipated to be postponed until 2026. Additionally, Toyota has intentions to manufacture another three-row electric SUV in Indiana during the same year.

Prior to this event, the mentioned document indicates that Subaru plans to reintroduce the Crosstrek Hybrid, which is a plug-in hybrid variant incorporating powertrain elements from Toyota. This model was previously phased out following the 2023 production year. It is said that the upcoming Crosstrek Hybrid will utilize the same hybrid technology as the 2026 Subaru Forester Hybrid, which is expected to be released the following year.
In 2023, Subaru announced a hastened electric vehicle strategy, aiming for half of its sales to consist of EVs by 2030. This will involve rolling out four new battery-electric vehicles by 2028, with plans to manufacture at least one model within the United States. Some of these upcoming models will incorporate contributions from Toyota. Additionally, like many leading EV manufacturers, Subaru has chosen to implement the Tesla North American Charging Standard (NACS) port for its forthcoming models.
