Top MotoGP Riders Endorse Simon Crafar for Race Direction Leadership: "A Positive Shift"
The leading trio in the MotoGP championship have expressed their support for Simon Crafar, believing he will bring greater consistency to Race Direction.
Simon Crafar is set to become the chairman of Race Direction for the 2025 MotoGP season.
Taking over from Freddie Spencer, who has faced significant criticism from numerous riders, Crafar steps into what might be seen as an unmanageable role.
However, MotoGP's top athletes are backing the New Zealander.
Francesco Bagnaia, the current leader of the world championship, remarked, "In my opinion, it's one of the most challenging roles within the paddock since making decisions is tough. However, I believe that with Simon, we can have a constructive conversation."
"We have frequent conversations with Simon on weekends, and I believe that maintaining consistency could result in excellent work. However, it's a challenging task."
Jorge Martin also supported Crafar's appointment because the former racer is eager to talk to the riders and gain extensive knowledge about the modern bikes.
"It's a significant shift for me," Martin started. "It's a major transformation. I'm well-acquainted with Simon and I'm aware that he continues to ride."
"He will gain a clearer understanding of the bike's movement and how quickly situations can shift."
"I believe he could handle various situations more evenly."
"He consistently seeks to grasp the nuances of the sport, often approaching us with questions to learn more. He is poised to excel in his new role."
Race Director Comparable to Football Referee
Highlighting that Crafar's role will be akin to a referee, a highly scrutinized position in many sports, Marc Marquez commented: "I wish Simon the best. It's a very challenging role."
"It's similar to being a football referee; you can't please everyone."
Ultimately, he sets the race regulations, and we must adjust to any new rules or boundaries.
"This year, things are shifting slightly, and I feel at ease. I believe we are on the correct path."
