Title Duel Narrows: Martin and Bagnaia Lead MotoGP Championship Race Amidst Bastianini and Marquez Setbacks
Martin, Bagnaia weigh in on Marquez and Bastianini's MotoGP championship chances…
“Until it's mathematically out of the question, I'll regard them as contenders. However…"
Has the battle for the 2024 MotoGP world championship narrowed down to a two-man race between Jorge Martin and Francesco Bagnaia for the last five races?
The inquiry was directed at the frontrunners for the championship, who are presently divided by a 21-point lead in favor of the Pramac competitor, during Thursday's event in Motegi, Japan.
Enea Bastianini and Marc Marquez were viewed as potential dark horses up until the Mandalika race last Sunday, where an expensive accident and mechanical breakdown resulted in them being 75 and 78 points behind the leader, respectively.
With 185 points remaining up for grabs, they would require misfortune to hit both Martin and Bagnaia.
In a campaign marked by unpredictability, Martin and Bagnaia have collectively experienced 11 instances of not scoring in a total of 30 races, showing that more surprising events have taken place.
"Mandalika definitely had a dramatic weekend, especially with my crash on Saturday followed by Enea and Marc's exit from the race on Sunday," Martin remarked. "It feels like it's been ages since I've considered Pecco and myself as the main contenders for the championship.
"There are still five races left, so there's still an opportunity for them. They definitely have the capability. If anyone can achieve it, it's them. However, at present, it seems to be quite challenging."
"Therefore, I believe it primarily involves Pecco and myself."
"It's a joy for me to have the opportunity to compete against champions such as Pecco and Marc, as well as an incredible rider like Enea. We'll wait and see how things unfold."
"I believe there's a possibility for them. However, undoubtedly, it presents a significant challenge."
Bagnaia, after securing his second MotoGP championship in a climactic battle against Martin in Valencia last season, concurred.
"Right from the beginning of the season, Jorge and I have been standing out from everyone else," Bagnaia remarked. "However, we must acknowledge that until it's mathematically impossible, Enea and Marc remain contenders for the championship."
"Jorge and I are fully aware of how simple it is to make an error or to experience a crash this season. It's a situation that can swiftly evolve."
"I'll keep them in mind until it becomes mathematically unfeasible. However, it's also accurate to say that since the midpoint of the season, we've been the ones at the forefront, dominating the races and the sessions."
"I believe it will continue in this manner until we reach Valencia."
