Thailand Takes Pole Position: Buriram to Host MotoGP 2025 Season Opener
Announcement: Thailand Selected as Starting Point for 2025 MotoGP Season
The initial race of the 2025 MotoGP World Championship is set to take place in Buriram, Thailand.
Thailand has been officially announced as the successor to Qatar for hosting the first race of the MotoGP World Championship, securing this position for the 2025 and 2026 seasons.
The inaugural Grand Prix of Thailand was hosted in 2018, and over the course of the four races held at the site to date, the event has attracted over 800,000 spectators to Buriram, often reaching full capacity on Sundays.
The fan base for MotoGP in Thailand might see an increase next year as local hero Somkiat Chantra is expected to team up with LCR Honda.
"Carmelo Ezpeleta, the CEO of Dorna Sports, which holds the rights to MotoGP, announced with great enthusiasm that the opening races for the 2025 and 2026 seasons will take place at the Thai Grand Prix in Buriram."
Southeast Asia stands out as a crucial region for us, not only for the sport itself but also for our manufacturing bases and collaborators. Thailand is at the forefront of this significance, evidenced by the massive gatherings we witness annually in Buriram. These enthusiastic fans are guaranteed to generate a phenomenal vibe for the season's opening event.
Once Buriram was added to the schedule, it quickly rose to the top of the list of favorites. The reason for its popularity is clear: it offers an exceptional MotoGP experience, featuring a track design that highlights the essence of our tight racing competitions – a fact that was clearly demonstrated by the outstanding performance witnessed at the circuit the previous year.
"We're excited to make a return later this year, followed by a groundbreaking season launch in 2025."
The complete tentative schedule for the 2025 MotoGP season has not been released, however, it is speculated that the Thailand race will take place on the first weekend of March, with the series then heading to India.
Dr. Gongsak Yodmani, head of the Sports Authority of Thailand, mentioned: "We acknowledge the many advantages of opening the season. This offers a great chance to use a top-tier sports event to boost the economy and create considerable income, aligning with the Sport Tourism strategy.
The 2025 MotoGP season is set to be especially thrilling due to the considerable shuffle of riders among teams during the off-season. This major change is expected to draw the attention of MotoGP enthusiasts from all corners of the globe, who are keen to witness their favorite racers debut their new motorcycles at the Chang International Circuit.
After an almost four-month hiatus, this upcoming race will mark the first opportunity to display the fresh team dynamics.
"Additionally, Dorna Sports, the company behind the event, is set to launch a comprehensive marketing campaign aimed at boosting the season's inaugural race's profile worldwide among racing aficionados. This strategy is expected to increase the prominence of the Thailand race and position it as a top attraction for MotoGP fans internationally."
The rationale behind Qatar giving up its prized position as the season's first event remains unexplained. Additionally, Lusail, which serves as the venue for the second and ultimate pre-season trial, is expected to move to Buriram due to logistical considerations.
The Sepang circuit, located close by in Malaysia, is anticipated to remain the site for the initial shakedown and the season's first official pre-test.
