Tech3’s Tumultuous Austrian GP: Acosta and Fernandez Face Hardest Weekend of the Season
Austria's MotoGP proved to be the toughest race of the year for Pedro Acosta and Tech3
Pedro Acosta, Augusto Fernandez, and the head of Tech3 share their thoughts on the challenges faced in Austria
Tech3 GASGAS leader Nicolas Goyon characterized the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix as the squad's "toughest weekend of the year."
At the Red Bull Ring, the sister team from KTM displayed a strong performance, with Brad Binder securing a fifth-place finish and Jack Miller in sixth before his crash. Meanwhile, Pedro Acosta and Augusto Fernandez found themselves battling beyond the top 10 positions.
Acosta had a challenging weekend, starting with a series of crashes on Friday. This led to the Spanish rider not advancing past Q1 and ultimately securing the 14th spot in the qualifying round.
At the Grand Prix, Acosta was only able to secure a 13th place finish, crossing the finish line 33.736 seconds behind the winner, while Fernandez trailed by an additional few seconds, ending up in 15th place.
"Hard to articulate anything," Acosta commented.
"We encountered unexpected issues, and frankly, I was unsure of their origin."
"Moving forward, let's explore how we can enhance our performance. The testing team has a couple of days in Misano before heading to Aragon, which presents a new surface for all competitors. We'll assess how far we can go."
Goyon mentioned, "This weekend was likely the most challenging one we've faced all season, and we anticipated it might be tough since we couldn't secure a spot in Q2."
"Contemplating the leading five turns significantly more challenging."
"Pedro wasn't as fast as he hoped to be in this Grand Prix, and we need to concentrate on improving our weaknesses to regain our strength."
"Augusto demonstrated resilience and managed to hold the 14th position until the final turn. We're looking at this optimistically and see it as a foundation to improve upon moving forward."
Fernandez mentioned that managing the rear tire turned his race into a battle for endurance, yet he was pleased to discover some speed for the grand prix after facing difficulties throughout the weekend.
"It's challenging. Here, effectively managing the rear tire is crucial, and it almost turns into a race of endurance," he commented.
"Ultimately, I'm satisfied with the outcome. Throughout the weekend, we faced difficulties and were somewhat behind, but I'm pleased with the progress we managed to achieve in terms of speed."
"I believe we gave it our all today. Now, it's time to focus on gaining momentum for the upcoming season."
