Tech3 GASGAS Faces Toughest Challenge of the Season at Austrian MotoGP: Acosta and Fernandez Reflect on Struggles
Austrian MotoGP Proves to Be the Toughest Challenge of the Season for Pedro Acosta’s Tech3 Team
Pedro Acosta, Augusto Fernandez, and the Tech3 team leader share their thoughts on the difficulties faced in Austria
Nicolas Goyon, the head of Tech3 GASGAS, labeled the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix as the team's "toughest weekend of the year."
At the Red Bull Ring, the KTM sister factory performed admirably, with Brad Binder finishing in fifth place and Jack Miller in sixth before he crashed. Meanwhile, Pedro Acosta and Augusto Fernandez found it difficult to break into the top 10.
Acosta had a tough weekend, struggling with crashes on Friday. The Spanish rider couldn't advance past Q1 and ended up qualifying in 14th place.
In the grand prix, Acosta managed to secure only the 13th position, finishing 33.736 seconds behind the winner. Meanwhile, Fernandez crossed the finish line a few seconds later, placing 15th.
"It's hard to express anything," Acosta remarked.
"We encountered some unexpected challenges, and to be frank, I had no idea where they were coming from."
"Alright, let's focus on how we can make progress. The test team has two days in Misano, and after that, they'll head to Aragon, where there will be a new track surface for everyone. We'll see what results we can achieve."
Goyon commented, “This was likely the toughest weekend of the season for us, and we anticipated it would be challenging when we couldn't secure a spot in Q2.
"Contemplating the leading five positions becomes significantly more challenging."
"Pedro lacked the desired speed in this Grand Prix, and we need to concentrate on our current weaknesses to regain our strength."
"Augusto demonstrated determination and was in 14th place until the final turn. We'll view this as a positive and use it as a foundation for future progress."
Fernandez mentioned that managing his rear tyre turned the race into a "survival" challenge for him. However, he was pleased to have discovered some speed for the grand prix after facing difficulties throughout most of the weekend.
"It’s challenging. You need to handle the rear tire with great care in this race, and it nearly turns into a battle for survival," he remarked.
"Ultimately, I'm satisfied with earning a point. Although we faced difficulties throughout the weekend and remained somewhat off the mark, I'm pleased with the progress we achieved in terms of speed."
"I believe we gave our best effort today. Let’s keep this momentum and build our confidence for the upcoming season."
