Strategic Triumph at the Austrian Grand Prix: How Russell Seized Victory Amid Verstappen-Norris Clash
George Russell discloses advice via radio about intense battle between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris
"Three laps prior, my engineer mentioned, 'they’re engaging in a tough battle'"
Through the team radio, George Russell received a message indicating he had a chance to clinch victory at the F1 Austrian Grand Prix, this was before Lando Norris had to pull out of the race
McLaren's Norris, who was in contention for the win, saw his race come to an premature end due to a collision with Red Bull's Max Verstappen.
The contentious event paved the way for Russell of Mercedes to claim his second victory in a Formula 1 Grand Prix.
"Truthfully, I was solely concentrating on optimizing my driving performance," Russell commented, regarding the moment Verstappen and Norris appeared in front of him.
"Marcus, my technician, mentioned three laps earlier, 'they're competing fiercely and we have a chance to win this'."
"And I mentioned, listen, our priority should be to secure third position, allow me to take the wheel. I was aware Oscar was quickly catching up from behind."
"After securing the lead position, I realized the final six laps would be a tough challenge."
"My tires were giving me trouble. The Virtual Safety Car (VSC) offered slight relief since my tires were getting too hot, and it provided an opportunity to lower their temperature."
"Winning a race in such an unusual manner is definitely odd. However, as mentioned, that's the nature of racing. At times, it doesn't work in your favor.
"I believe we may have overlooked a couple of opportunities to win."
"Montreal was secured, possibly even Singapore; last year, the outcomes could have been marginally different, but today, fortune was on our side. That's just the way things unfold."
Russell had to fend off McLaren's Oscar Piastri to secure his victory at the Red Bull Ring.
"Truthfully, I believed he would make the catch," Russell confessed.
"However, I believe that while capturing someone's attention is one aspect, surpassing them is entirely different."
"Yesterday, for ten laps, Carlos was on my tail within my DRS zone, and for about eight laps, I was chasing him within his DRS zone, finding it challenging to pass."
"I realized, I simply told myself, stick to what you're good at, avoid unnecessary risks, and you'll secure victory in this competition."
George Russell discusses strategy adjustment
Regarding the concluding laps without Verstappen and Norris competing, Russell mentioned, "The challenge came from encountering numerous slower cars ahead, which significantly impacted our race."
"If luck is on your side with the placement, you can activate DRS on the first turn and then continue it through turns three and four, potentially gaining a six-tenths advantage."
If luck isn't on your side, you might end up losing nearly six-tenths of a second. This means you could see a total time disparity of up to 1.2 seconds depending solely on your timing with overtaking slower cars.
"The moment when only two seconds separated Oscar and myself was likely the most tension-filled."
Russell celebrated his victory, claiming it to be the most strategic success Mercedes has orchestrated for him throughout the season.
"Certainly, I believe we executed everything quite effectively," he remarked.
"In each session, we believe we achieved the maximum potential, securing the highest qualification we genuinely thought was attainable."
The beginning of the races has been strong. Finishing in fourth position in yesterday's race was the best possible outcome. In reality, a third-place finish was the highest achievable and the rightful result today.
"It's really gratifying to see the team's effort acknowledged with a reward. They truly put in an outstanding performance."
Russell was strategically positioned and utilized a medium tire during the midpoint of the grand prix. He was queried on whether this approach benefited him in the latter stages against Piastri.
"To be straightforward, I believe it didn't make any difference," he responded.
"I believe it's challenging. We divided the strategies with Lewis in an effort to attempt a different approach."
"The outcome of the race is always uncertain, and virtual safety cars play a significant role in that."
"The Virtual Safety Car (VSC) period towards the end was really beneficial for me. It gave me a chance to lower the temperature of my tyres, and as a result, my speed compared to Oscar over the final five laps remained consistent even though he was on medium tyres."
"Thus, the car has been performing exceptionally well recently. We acknowledge there's still a bit of effort required to maintain a steady position in the competition for the podium. However, when comparing the progress we've made against teams like Ferrari and Aston Martin since the Bahrain race, it's quite significant."
Russell mentioned regarding his journey to triumph: "The conditions were quite breezy, and I believe the vehicle was acting somewhat odd during my laps to the starting line.
We verified all aspects, and all appeared to be in order, yet the tempo seemed intense.
"Lewis made an early move on me during the race, but after I managed to overtake him again, I was able to create some distance between myself and Carlos."
"I was aware that Oscar had the speed, and he kind of emerged unexpectedly towards the race's conclusion."
Dealing with those tough tyres was a challenge for me, and then out of nowhere, I had Toto yelling right into my earpiece, telling me I could win. His shout was so loud I nearly lost control of the car. But I guess it really highlights the intense passion we all have. It's been a rough few years for us, so getting back to winning feels amazing.
